Converting Quick Time Files To MPEG... Help.

Wed Jan 26, 2005 11:35 pm

I just love posting these threads where my ignorance is revealed...

Anyway...  Smile

I'm looking for a program that can convert quick time videofiles into MPEG files. Does anyone have a good link to a site where this can be downloaded from?

And one final question to underline my ignorance on the subject: Is MPEG the same as Windows media?

Help and some pointing fingers while laughing much appreciated.

MPEG is not windows media (WMV).

To convert one to the other you probably need a video editing software that can read one and save it as another. You probably just can't convert one to the other directly

This has a 30 day trial. You may need to convert MOV to 3GP format before converting that to MPEG.

Has anyone come across mp4 files by any chance? Rather annoying since my Windows Media Player doesn't support them, my Quicktime won't play it, DivX, RealPlayer, nothing. Is there something wrong with my computer or do I need to download additional software?

I think iTunes plays mp4 files, so that may be the problem.

Well, I'm not so up to date on all the latest software. The mp4 files I have are actually movie files...I was under the impression that itunes only did music. Or am I completely out of it? I do have them working fine on my computer...they just open using Internet Explorer now.

I just looked, and my iTunes music files end in either .m4p or .m4a, not mp4. Guess they are different, and I have no idea what the mp4 works with.

.mp4 is MPEG-4. QuickTime 6 can play it; if you have an older version, you'll need to upgrade. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/qt/. If you're using Windows 2000/XP and don't want to download iTunes as well, follow the link to the Standalone Installer.

OLY720man, at long last i tried out the link you reccomended. And it looked very good. I could convert the MOV files to either MPEG or WMV with no problem.

However, as this was just a trial version, I was only allowed to convert halv the video length of the MOV file.  Sad I need to register to get the full version.

So anyone got advice on where I can find a complete version of such a converting program?

Ok so nobody can help? I'm pretty desperate here...  Sad

All the "convert MOV to MPEG" programs I've tried only converted half of the file since it was a free trial version.  Crying

Klaus, thanks for the link, but it appears this will only convert MPEG files into i.e. Quick Time files. I want it to go the other way...  Smile

I'll give it a go nontheless...

No, MPEG Streamclip has an MPEG export function among other things and can use the other plugin codecs as well.

Ah I see... And this is a freeware version that converts the whole thing (not just 50%), and doesn't need any other programs to run? Sorry for all the questions...  Smile

Hmm, edit update; I downloaded it, and now it just sits there... *dmg file, which I can't seem to use for anything...

Thom@s Streamclip is written for MacOS X, you are probably using a Windows PC.

Another and maybe stupid question: Why do you convert yout QT-Movies into MPEGs?

Does anyone know how to convert a bmp image to a jpeg image?

Pretty much any software for digital imaging ... Photoshop, Fireworks, QFX ....

Yes, I have a Windows PC...

My camera (photography) can make rather low quality film clips. These are saved as Quick time files on my computer. I have quite a few video clips from an Airshow I attended last summer, and would like to edit them together, and perhaps add some music etc. I've got the editing program, Pinnacle Studio DV version 9. But this can't edit Quick Time files. Therefore I have to convert them first, and then edit them in Pinnacle stutio...

I made a search on DC++ btw, didn't find anything.

Sigh, why does it always have to be so complicated...?  Smile

Damn!  Smile

So there is still no way for me (who uses Windows) to convert these MOV files into MPEG?

 Sad

I don´t know about Windows tools... At least under MacOS, the "pro" version of the QuickTime player is also a light-weight editing tool which should be able to do exactly what you need (splicing multiple MOVs together). It can export clips into other formats as well, but it costs a small fee.

I´m not sure if it´s available for Windows, though.

Yes, QT-Pro for Windows is capable of editing QT-Movies as well.

Here's a list of free video editing software:
http://www.multi-cam.net/camera_progs_free.html

Or download a trial version of Adobe Premiere or similar. As far as I know, trial versions do not safe your project files but support file conversion.

Hmm... thanks for the link, but still none of them offer the possibility to convert files, which I need to do before editing...

Thom@s, why don't you just edit your videos using Zweistein or Virtual Edit (both are listed)?

If it really has to be Pinnacle, spend some (additional  Insane) bucks on QT-Pro. QuickTime Pro not only edits QuickTime movies but can also export them.

Hmm, I could spend some extra cash on it, but I'm sure there must be a convertion program out there somewhere, that's free. Just bloody hard to find, that's all...  Smile
