British Phone Etiquette

Fri Jan 28, 2005 5:47 am

Everytime that I make a call to the UK something always feels awkward in terms of phone etiquette between me and the person on the other end. How does British phone etiquette differ from that of the US? Any do's and don'ts? Ususally me saying 'good-bye' at the end seems awkward.

Why does it seem awkward? If you met a friend in the street you would say bye when you parted? Saying bye makes an end to a conversation, but its ok to put the phone down on someone whos bothering you

I usually say 'see ya' or 'laters' or 'in a bit' to whoever i'm talking to, unless its someone from work in which case i'll say 'bye'. I don't really know any 'phone etiquette' though.
