Rio Carbon 5GB MP3 Player Opinions

Fri Jan 28, 2005 6:27 am

I was wondering if anyone out there has the Rio Carbon 5GB MP3 Player. By the looks and sounds of it, it's meant to be an ipod mini competitor, but cheaper. Anyone own one and have opinions about it?

Well I'll be the first to tell you to take the same $299 you would spend on that 5GB mp3 player, and spend it on the 20GB version of the iPOD for the same price.

I'm not sure if it was that version of the RIO, but one of their products is plagued with hard-drive failures.

You can get a more reliable Creative MP3 player for alot less. Check this link out http://www.google.com/froogle?q=5GB+MP3&btnG=Search+Froogle

Please Keep in mind that the prices listed are in CAD. If you're $299 quote is CAD too please show me where you saw that because I don't believe it considering I get a very good discount (Just over cost for the store) and it doesn't even come near to $299.

I'm not sure if it was that version of the RIO, but one of their products is plagued with hard-drive failures.

I did read one review, and only one where a person was saying how in the middle of play it froze up and said something up an upgrader. They took it in and it was fried, or along those lines...then They got an ipod. I believe on future shops site.

this product is alright, but not great. I was pleased with the batterly life, audio quality, etc. but the problem is its actual construction. after a while, it just basically died and said "upgrader" on the window, and i had to exchange it to get my ipod. all in all, ipod > carbon. "

I'd love a 20gb ipod, but I don't really have the money at the moment, since I'm already getting a couple other higher end/pricey items!!

I had the Rio Karma.. Great features, awsome battery life.. but it died..

Spend the money and get an IPOD. Like it or not, it is still the best.. you will end up trashing it and having to buy an IPOD eventually.. Save yourself the extra step

Oops, my bad, I didn't realize it was in Canadian Dollars, so yes it is cheaper than an iPOD. In that case, I can't really compare the two. I would say spend the extra money and get the iPOD. Its almost like a long term investment now.

All these "ipod killers" that are coming out now like the rio carbon, creative zen touch etc. have one fatal problem. They aren't iPods!

Ipods are the original and the best.

I brought a MP3 player that was less than $100 and it died less than a week old. I actually still use it as a portable memory USB device with a cable but doesn't play any music.

Save the money wait if you have to and then buy an Ipod.
