Marat Safin Wins Australian Open 2005 Centenary

Sun Jan 30, 2005 10:10 pm

Russian Marat Safin has crashed local hope Lleyton Hewitt's party, recovering from a set down to claim the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup as Australian Open men's singles champion at his third attempt.

Beaten by Thomas Johansson in 2002 and Roger Federer 12 months ago in the decider at Melbourne Park, Safin looked set for more heartbreak when he surrendered the opening set to a fired-up Hewitt in just 23 minutes.

But the No.4 seed lifted his output and squared the match with the only break of the second set, before then rallying from a break down in the third to run away with the match and prevail 1-6 6-3 6-4 6-4 in two hours and 45 minutes.

Safin was worn out and simply couldn't stay with Federer in 2004, having endured several long matches coming in, but after those two heartbreaking losses, he is now a Grand Slam champion for a second time, following his 2000 US Open victory.

Congrats to Safin. Although I was rooting for Agassi (and after he lost, Federer), Safin played amazing and deserved to win.

Congrats must go to Marat for the victory. It was a great effort to come back from such a poorly played first set riddled with unforced errors to win the match.

Whilst I was certainly barracking for Lleyton (it's been a LONG time between drinks for us at the Aus Open), Marat's a bit of a surrogate son here and both players received a warm reception after the match.

Out of interest, how much of the Open have people outside Australia seen? It's pretty much been on TV from 1100-0000 with the quick break for news and 'Home and Away' every single day.

They had live coverage here on the East coast at about 3am, but I assume not that many people watched it.  Smile

I'm not really into tennis, and don't really follow it.

BTW What did Hewitt do to make everyone hate him so much? I keep hearing negative comments about him on here, but I have no idea what he did.

Yesssssssssss

Hewitt lost  Big thumbs up ..haha, that jerk deserves it. I was rooting for Safin and it was great to see him win.

Basically, Hewitt is an a-hole on the court, with all his antics. He couldn't shut up even during the finals, he verbally abused a ballboy, and got a penalty or something for that. No wonder so many Australians (including me) absolutely hate him. Total jerk.

It's gonna be a great Monday  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

"..i can't believe the amount of tree swingers in Australia that actually like this twat..."

Tree swingers - what does this mean ?

"..No wonder so many Australians (including me) absolutely hate him. Total jerk..."

Are all those who cheered on Hewitt at Rod Laver and outside "tree swingers" ? Springbok, what do you base your comments on ?

Marat won and I believe that Hewitt accepted that well. He thanked the linesman/woman and ball kids afterwards in his speech. He got out of line, as others do (racket chucking) and got a penalty. Tension does that to people in sport. Not nice and not condoned, and appropriately dealt with.
By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?

yeah he thanked them at the end of the game but had no qualms in threatning one of them during the game did he?!?! he's a total disgrace and deserved to lose, and you just have to watc 7 sunrise to see what a tree swinger is, it refers to people who are immitating him.

the guy is a total fukwit and deserves all he gets that's bad.

We seem to be running duplicate posts on Hewitt. See the other thread for my comments.

This is absurd, not only are we abusing each other, but we're doin it in two separate threads!

I'm not sure even Lleyton deserves TWO threads in one day.

Karan- I gotta go with my boy Roddick. I think he holds the top two fastest serves on record right now.
