Official SoCal Thread 4

Mon Jan 31, 2005 8:49 am

Ok...it's been at LEAST a week since I posted some images from SoCal here.

So to the disdain of one KROC, and to the delight of everyone else, here are some more. This particular set of pictures is basically a few "before" and "after" shots. You don't realize how much things change until you go back and compare. Included is a follow up to a spot I posted about before.

Anyway, let's start with that. Below is basically the entrance to the city of San Dimas. The scene in question is facing generally north west, at the bottom of the offramp of the 210/57 freeway, at Arrow Highway and Bonita Ave. The first picture is basically how this spot looked at least from the late 70's to the late 90's. The second picture is the same spot and how it looks today (picture was taken this morning after I wrapped up breakfast with dad).

Moving on to the other side of town, these are a few angles from the so-called "Strawberry Patch" (so named because up until the late 80's, strawberries grew here.). It sits right at the border of San Dimas and Glendora, at the northwest corner of Gladstone Ave and Lone Hill. This development was the result of a very nasty political fight between the two cities. Glendora wanted it because of the tax dollars. San Dimas opposed it because of the traffic. Plus, because of the way the city lines are drawn out, most of the shoppers would be from San Dimas. This site is too inconvenient for all but a couple of square miles of Glendora residents to use. But since the land technically sits within the Glendora city limits, they had the final say. It ended up going to a vote, and of course, Glendora approved the project by something like an 80% margin. The election hadn't been finalized for a week when the first bulldozers started moving in.

There are three pictures here of the above mentioned intersection. First, is how it looked from about 1988-1998. The second shows the early stages of construction, in 1999. And the last shot is from this morning, 2005.

Now, we go to the city to the east, La Verne. Pictured is a piece of land on the north side of Foothill Blvd, between the 210 underpass and Wheeler Ave. Unfortunately, I took todays pictures from memory and are therefore not exact in terms of location and angle. But you can get an idea from the hills in the background that this is indeed the same spot. Originally, the 210 ended at Foothill Blvd. The future right of way was in the background. Today, the freeway runs right the buildings.

Moving east, we come to Rancho Cucamonga. The intersection is that of Vineyard and Foothill, again, facing north west. This particular intersection is of interest to me because many years ago, a girl I liked a lot lived very close to here. And therefore, this lot is of special sentimental value to me. 'Nuff said.

First picture shows as the lot looked from at least 1989 (first time I ever seen it) until about January 2000. Second shot is of same location, from this morning.

Moving further east, we come to the junction of Interstate 15 and the newly constructed 210 Extension. Here is that particular interchange as it looked in 1998, 2000, and this morning:

I'm on my way down! Most likely spending the summer in O.C. (Yorba Linda) which I am looking forward too. Also looking forward to colleging it up in SoCal as well. Once I'm there, I'm staying there for life, it's just too nice.

Great pics as always, Matt!

Nice to see the Route 66 sign on the pre-LA Fitness empty lot (Wheeler/210) picture. Somewhere along that stretch of Foothill is a new rather trendy-looking McDonalds. Still though, the food isn't near as good as at the old In-N-Out not too far east along Foothill.

Good construction and after-views of the 210 extension. Kind of odd to walk out the door of my dad's house (where I grew up) in Claremont, and hear the distant sound of cars tooling down the freeway.
