Underground/subway Smart Passes

Tue Feb 01, 2005 12:35 am

Although I was driving to work in Elbonia, I now have the (dis)plpeasure to ride the Metro everyday to work.

For january, I had bought what is called a 'Carte Orange', one month pass valid for certain part of Paris underground network.

However, I soon discovered that a all-year cheaper pass was available. Called Navigo, it has the aditionnal perk to be a contactless pass. You don't have to take the ticket out of your wallet - you just pass your wallet/card holder quickly over the card reader logo.

I have although learned that London Underground now offers a similar pass (Oyster card).

Are any other network using such a pass system ? And a crazy idea of mine : do you think it would be possible for me to use my Navigo pass whenever I am in London, a bit like I would use my cellphone in roaming...

Here in Seoul, you can use most credit cards, or just use the rechargable metro/bus card. If you use those.. you get discounts every trip. You can transfer to most bus/surface routes for free, also.
The biggest mistake made by most human beings: Listening to only half, understanding just a quarter and telling double.

In London, everyone has always been able to buy either a daily Travelcard, a weekly, monthly, or annual pass. The new Oyster card make it easier to travel, as it doesn't require you to keep having to get your card out to put it through the machine. Instead you can have it in your wallet (as I do) and touch it on the yellow pad, and the gates will open. At the moment it is only possible to get an Oyster card for Pre-pay (which is what I have), a weekly, monthly or annual card. It isn't possible to get a daily Travelcard on Oyster.

The daily Travelcard has just gone up to £6 from £5.40, and I think the annual card is something like £2,000, depending on what zones you want to travel to.

To get back to the Seoul system : I used that thingy for 6 months during my internship period, and while quite convenient, one day it also erased all my credit card data ! Rhaa !

New York has daily, weekly and monthly MetroCards, which offer unlimited subway and bus rides. Prices are $7, $21 and $70 respectively, though they will be rising soon. Unlike many other transit systems, New York's does not charge according to length of ride, and there's no higher price charged during rush hours. MetroCards must be swiped through subway turnstiles or dipped into bus fareboxes. Swipe/dipless proximity readers have been discussed but nothing's yet been done.
