Car Dealer Says "Buy One, Get One Free"!

Thu Feb 03, 2005 12:05 am

A car dealer in Minnesota has been advertising a "Buy one, get one free" car offer. Basically, if you buy a new pickup or SUV at full sticker price, the dealer will give you a 2005 Chevy Aveo for free.

Story here: http://www.startribune.com/stories/535/5217526.html

.................

Okay, I do realize that you really are paying for the Aveo by paying the MSRP value of the pickup or SUV, but this is still kind of interesting. Firt of all, I had never heard of a Chevy Aveo before reading this article. It's actually kind of a cute care which gets pretty good gas mileage especially compared ot the SUV or pickup. And I sure never thought that there was a vehicle out there these days that you could buy for under $10,000 (the MSRP on the Aveo is $9,999)

A KIA dealership was doing something similar here last fall. Buy one of their SUV's, and you could get a Rio for just the taxes. A few problems: the Rio was very standard-no extra's, not even air conditioning, I believe. Plus the salesmen weren't offering that deal up front. You had to ask, and even then, they made it very difficult.

If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I test drove an Aveo last fall, before we bought our Malibu, and it's an OK little car-a lot more room in it than it looks, and it drove fine. But again, there has to be more to it than meets the eye.  Smile

One Kia is bad enough! Why on god's earth would you want two!

The Today Show did a piece on the buy one get one free deal. There was a Nissan dealership in NJ that was giving a slightly used 2003/2004 Nissan Sentra away with the purchase of some bigger more expensive Nissan, something along the lines of a 350z or an Armada.

The upside to deals like this you get two cars. The downside is that you probably won't get a good deal on the car that you wanted to buy. The reason that they do the buy one get one free deal is that there is a fair amount of rebate and dealer holdback money on both cars. Certainly enough for them to make up any potential loss from the ~ $10,000 second car in the deal. But you are probably getting the first car for close to MSRP.

Local Chevy dealer was doing this with the purchase of a new vehicle you had a choice of a free Aveo/Cavalier. Probably both pretty stripped versions, too, I'd wager. I'll pass on both the low budget econobox, and the 22 year old technology of the J-car, thank you.

I'd rather get a good deal on the NEW car, and use what I saved to buy a good used Civic.

BUT WAIT! If you call in the next fifteen minutes, we'll DOUBLE your order for free! Just pay shipping and handling!

Not a new idea, really, but a marketing scheme that is more rare in auto sales than other consumer products. Several dealerships here in Middle TN embarked on the same idea a year or so ago, but I don't know how successful the campaign was. The following "round" figures are for illustration only, and "profit" may be higher or lower, but it will give you an idea:

SUV list price: 41,000 Dealer Cost: 30,500
Shitbox price: 10,000 Dealer Cost: 8,500

You pay for both: $41,000. Dealer Profit: $2,000, Plus kickbacks, incentives, brooming two units off the floorplan inventory finance charges. Like I said, these may not be the actual figures, but rest assured that the dealer has enough juice to make the transaction profitable to him.

In the 1960s a Ford dealer in the LA area did a similar thing fairly successfully, only the second "freebie" was a used car, not a new product. Buyer beware... any "deal" that's too good to be true usually is. Regards...Jack

I read that in the 50's luxury car dealers might toss in a Nash Metropolitan or some other sub-compact as an incentive to buy.

Just what I'd like, a 1958 Lincoln, and a Goggomobile!

If you don't stand for SOMETHING, you'll fall for ANYTHING.

Imagine Boeing or Airbus trying this:
"Buy a 747ER and get a 717 free!"
"Buy a 340-500 or -600 and get an 318 free!"

It is actually cheap advertising if you think about it. The dealer is giving away 1500 dollars of their profit yet getting it back by selling more cars.

servicing...warranty claims...plenty of money made in aftersales. Dealers bill the manufacturers for warranty work and the client pays servicing in cash.

Two cars off the lot means two lots of aftersales income.

You guys are missing the point. The Aveo is used as a lifeboat. You put it in the SUV or pick-up and if (will, since it's a Chevy) you break-down, you have a way to get to the service station. Hell, you don't even need a spare tire anymore.

Not a bad idea for a sales promotion at all. Many people will probably pony up the full MSRP for the SUV without thinking twice that it's a sour deal on what they really wanted in the first place - the SUV.

As Cptkrell pointed out, this dealer will definitely still make a profit.

Unfortunately, the Aveo is a weak little Korean GM that probably won't hold together for more than a few weeks.

The Aveo is used as a lifeboat.

LOL, love that comment. Big grin

Scott
