Do Any Non-Americans Watch The Super Bowl?

Sun Feb 06, 2005 6:07 pm

On a related super bowl post I noticed that all the posts were American. The super bowl being such a huge event, do any other countries (other than Canada with their half-assed Grey Cup equivalent-and yes I watched the Grey Cup this year in Calgary) have any interest in the super bowl, especially considering most are asleep in Europe when the Super Bowl's on.

No - It barely gets a 30sec segment on the sports news. Not surprising really - we are a rugby/cricket/anything else that isn't American football nation. Cricket is one game you actually wear helmets and padding, but Football? come on..

wow-barely 30 seconds on the sports news, that amazes me considering that companies spend millions and millions for a 15 second spot on what probably about 90% of americans are watching. I'd bet we get at least 2 minutes of soccer coverage, though I've never seen cricket.

my favorite sports to watch are still tennis and hockey.

No, we get something like a 10 second spot about it, and I think that's only on Sundays. Like Aerorobnz said, we are crazy about cricket/tennis/golf/AUSTRALIAN FOOTY/rugby/anything else that's not American football.

It's cricket season right now, and the sports news is just cricket...nothing else.

Do you actively participate in the local game in the UK in any way, go and see the local team, coach, play, referee?

Or are you like most of the lard arses that profess to be football lovers and just sit on the couch and watch NFL

Not on German TV, except maybe on dedicated pay-per-view sports channels, which I don´t subscribe to (and which are not very populat anyway).

I'll be watching it myself, after seeing last years show (think it was last year..well the last time it was on) definitely more livelier than Rugby for sure, plus all the build-up beforehand is pretty cool to watch.
Also watch NASCAR whenever I can too..

Danish Tv2 & it's spinoff Tv2 Zulu has been showing the entire season, along with all the playoff games (2on saturday & 2 on sunday) - so you can bet that they're airing the Super Bowl tonight. I'll go ahead & sacrifice a good nights sleep for this one. They even have Morten Andersen on to comment for them Big grin

OYRJA If you watch it on Danish TV you will hear Morten Andersen announcing it. He is one of the highest scorers in NFL history and played for the Falcons for several years.

One of the most accurate and reliable kickers in our game. Under pressure you could not ask for someone better.

I see that the Dutch TV channel SBS6 will broadcast the Superbowl live, though I doubt many will watch it (besides US expats?). Few people here understand American Football here.

Unfortunately you need pay-TV to watch it here in Germany, in the past I always saw it because they showed it on a free-TV channel.

I used to play in my teens as an offensive lineman in a local youth team and later was involved in a bit of coaching in the youth flag football scene, but now I'm just one of the lard arses that enjoys watching Sky on Sunday night's with a beer.

I'm not surprised that a lot of the overseas markets don't watch the Super Bowl. Over here in the states, there is zero coverage of European sports, mainly because of lack of interest. I have actually never seen cricket on TV in the US. Unless the US is playing, the World Cup gets the 10 second overview on the evening news. The fact is, if the viewers aren't interested, it's not going to get played.

Although my favourite sport is what americans call "soccer" (what the hell does that mean anyway?), I really like American Football, both NFL and College (That's the other question, why do you call it football when the foot is what you use less in the game?). Here in Argentina, and I think in most of the cable operators of South America, we get live on ESPN monday night football, and depending on other programming, we get 1 or 2 games on Sunday (sometimes it's live). We also get 1 game on Fox sports, but rarely live. It's usually late at night, after all "our" football is finished  Big grin. Fox Sports Latin America will be showing the Superbowl and there is no way I'm going to miss it! I also like the whole Superbowl mentality and I have been preparing for it ... I filled the fridge with beer and will be ordering some chicken wings from hooters!! By the way, I'm a bears fan (no one laugh please!) and it's funny cause I've never been near Chicago!

Of course they're gonna watch, it's only the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP in football.

I think that Americans sometimes have a diva complex. If the world doesn't revolve around us, then we pout. Why can't we call the Super Bowl what it is, the American national championship game?

Personally, I only bother to watch if I'm with friends, and then only for the halftime and the commercials. I don't really care for any NFL/AFC or NBA pro team.

In Mexico is a big deal. This year the two biggest Mexican networks (TV Azteca and Televisa) are broadcasting live the game. The American football (as we call it, for us football means soccer) is hugely popular since the NFL has been on TV for decades now.

BTW... GO PATS!

But it didn't get nearly the airtime as other sporting events, especially with it being so popular around the world. Most people in the US just don't care about soccer, myself included, and that is why the MLS has zero attendance and the WUSA went under. It is just different cultures, and we are just not a soccer-loving country.

We know that there'll be no problem filling a stadium, and there's a huge TV market, so why no team yet?

I guess it's a matter of time. Nonetheless, I know many American cities are waiting for a chance to get a team. It'd be difficult to explain them that a foreign city is getting a franchise when they have been waiting for it for years. Anyway, I'm still hopeful.

I think that as a business opportunity for the NFL they should go for it. LA and Mexico are the two largest markets with no team, and both could well support one.

The Cowboys have been accused of preventing this expansion up to now, since they are the "home team" for most Mexicans due to their tv presence.

Paul McCartney is currently rocking the half time show!

I watch the superbowl and as much NFL as i can throughout the year! I have followed the NFL for about 3-4 years now, and have watched the superbowl for 6 years!

Come on Eagles!  Laugh out loud

My team isnt in the finals so i'm gonna root for the eagles!

I normally watch it most years (& these days they have pretty good coverage of general NFL / NBA / baseball on a channel here called 'channel 5' too  Smile).

However, we never get the real commentary for the super bowl. We get like a 'for people who've never watched american football' feed which is still pretty good but never really feels like John Madden...

This year though I mainly listened on internet radio (while flying my floatplane in fs2004 Alaska!)

As long as LA doesn't have a franchise, there's no way Mexico will get one. Once LA does, though (and Taglabue has said it will within 8 or so years), I can see a Mexico City team about 5 years later.

In Australia it's live on free-to-air on the public SBS network.

Here in Western Australia it's at 7am Monday morning with kick-off half an hour later so I got into work a bit later  Smile

Nope, don't watch it. The news here focused more on Paul McCartney than the game... They also showed an interview with a guy who claimed Super Bowl is the television show viewd by most people in the world, as it according to him is broadcasted in over 100 countries. Seems however, like most of those who watch it outside the US are mainly interested in the half time show etc.

Still the World Cup has more viewers.  Smile

If you mean capacity-wise, Alltel Stadium in JAX usually sits around 76,000 or so, though it was expanded to around 84,000 for the Super Bowl with temporary seats...real nice stadium, Ive gone down there for a few regular season Jags games, one of the nicest NFL stadiums I've been to...

As SFOMEX has said, in Mexico it is important, also there are college teams with ever increasing level (nowhere near US college top teams yet), so there is a sizable public of people directly involved with football and "lard arses that profess to be football lovers and just sit on the couch and watch NFL". I myself enjoy watching the game. Players don't just fall to the field for anything as in soccer. I respect that.

Yes the time difference is different for all of us. Over here in Germany it was aired live on AFN (American Forces Network) but without the commercials. It would cost too much for AFN to air the Super Bowl with the commercials, so that is why on Monday night here they aired all the commercials that we missed in a seperate program. However only Americans over here with an AFN decoder can get AFN.
