How To Decrease My Sugar Consumption?

Mon Feb 07, 2005 6:25 pm

I tend to have twice or thrice a day a cup of coffee, and I have the bad habit of putting too much sugar in it ( friends and coworkers often make the joke that I add coffee on my sugar).

Anyway, I am aware ingesting too much sugar can be dangerous to one's health, (what with diabet and obesity (please, no comment about that UTA )) and I would like to decrease the amount of sugar I put in my coffee.

Two years ago, I was putting 4 sugars in a mug, now it is down to 2 and a half, but the coffee is too bitter if I go down to 2 or less. Any idea on how to do it ?

Cheers,

Use sweeteners. I'll bet they are a little more healthy than 2½ sugar cubes.

Actually, I'd prefer avoiding sweeteners. They don't really have the same taste as suger, and it's been discovered rececntly that they were not really healthy. It appears that when the mouth/tongue tastes/eat something sweet, be it from sugar or from a sweetener, it will send the signal to the brain who will ask for insulin release. Good if there is sugar to store, bad if there is no actual sugar, as it is the case with a sweetener.

Try a flavored coffee or add some cinnamon before brewing.

Don't make the coffee as strong, that way the sugar taste won't get masked by the coffee.

This is how I did it:

Put 5 heap teaspoons of instant coffee in your cup instead of 1-2, and no sugar. Then take it like a man, and drink it. Have it for a few days, and your taste buds will never be the same again. 2 sugars will start to taste like 4.

Now my coffee sugar has cut back heaps. It's too bad i'm drinking over 1.5 litres of pepsi a day.

Don't use artificial sugar, those things will give you cancer.

NZ, your method seems interesting, I might want to try it.

This week could be a good time, as Lent starts next wednesday (and I hear UTA say RHAA).

I think that instead of the coffee, you should cut down on stuff like sweets (when I purchased 707cmf's Astrhaa it came with 3 kg of sweet wrappers as standard equipment), candy bars, chocolate, etc...
These things made your butt look like the way it is today.

Did you ever hear of a program called DARE over in the states? Well if you didnt, it basically taught the dangers of drugs and alcohol from local law enforcement(cops  Big grin) and they told us to say no. So perhaps you could pretend that its a drug and you tell it NO!.

I used to put a ton of sugar in my coffee, now I just put a dash of creamer in it. Just slowly ween yourself off of it, that's what I did.

Perhaps try switching to brown sugar (you didn't specify but I presumed you used white sugar).. maybe brown will be sweeter (and a little more healthier) and you'll need less.. Also just try weening yourself off the sugar completely. I used to always put sugar in my coffee now I can't stand it. Now I actualy taste the coffee (and that says a lot for North American coffee which is about as weak and horrible as coffee can get)... in Europe you at least have fabulous flavor so why ruin it with sugar... enjoy.

why dont u add a small bit of honey into your drink instead of sugar, some honey brands are all natural and less refined, plus much sweeter than most sugars

Keeping your sugar consumption at its present level probably won't be any big deal. You said that you have two or three coffees a day, with 2.5 spoonfuls of sugar in each one. Assuming three coffees, and counting the sugar as 20 calories per spoonful, you're only talking about 150 calories per day from the sugar in your coffee. If your diet's otherwise okay, and your weight's not a problem, I wouldn't worry about adding sugar to your coffee.
