"Or" How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb"?

Or were you talking about that bit regarding the mine shaft gap?

All my DVDs are packed because I am moving in the next few days, so I am working off memory.

Dr. Strangelove says something about "the fuhrer" after that I can't understand. It's the very last line, then it cuts to the video of the bombs going off.

"Mein Fuhrer, I can walk!"

An excellent cold-war saitre film knee-deep in a hilarious sexual allegory. One of my favourites in film studies.

You guys know that Slim Pickens was a last minute choice after Peter Sellers took a spill and broke his foot.

Apparently his arrival in London to work on the picture was delayed because he did not have a passport.

And one of the British Secretaries at the studio when she picked him up at the airport exclaimed....look he brought his own costume!

UTA, got my copy out right now. I highly recommended.

It came out in 1964, Petter Sellars, Sterling Hayden, Slim Pickens, George C. Scott and it was also Darth Vaders first movie role, ok actually he goes by the name James Earl Jones. Stanley Kuberick directed

It was really a pretty intense movie for the period, and it is amazing how much they got right considering that much of the flight deck of the B-52 at that time would have been heavily classified. Apparently they freaked out some USAF personel who visited the set, with their mock up of the aircraft cockpit.

Oh I forgot the set design was by the same guy that did a lot of the James Bond sets...I can't think of the name, but he designed the Ft. Knox set and the "Goldfinger ranch" sets for the James Bond film.

And one other trivia question.

After filming Slim Pickens had to come back and redub one line, the line in the film ended up being, "Shoot a fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff". They had to change the name of the city in the line....

Lets see if somebody here knows why.

It was originally 'Dallas' and it was changed due to Kennedy's assassination. Similarly, the film was originally to have ended with a food fight in the War Room prior to the end of the world (which is why there was that large banquet table of food there) and at one point, the President was to have been hit in the face with a pie, to which General Turgidson was to have said "Gentlemen! Our gallant young president has just been struck down in his prime!" While Kubrick had decided to scratch this scene prior to JFK's death, because he felt it was a little too silly for the film's otherwise dark comedy, the last line was still a pretty eerie coincidence.

His name is Ken Adam, he's great...for the Bond films, he also did the volcano lair in You Only Live Twice and the supertanker set in The Spy Who Loved Me, which Kubrick helped with the set lighting as a favor.

2 Oscars to his credit...

BTW, Dr. Stranglove was a great movie, the whole "precious bodily fluids" thing was hilarious.

l-188....there is a line of rumor, recently given life in the movie about Sellers, that he faked his foot injury in order to duck out of playing the Kong character.

I'm pretty good with that, as Slim Pickens really added some great color to the role.

Sellers was a phenomenal talent. Many who saw the movie did not know how many of those roles he played. They could not identify him.

His portrayal of the president was too damn funny, and George C. Scott was the best. Dr. Strangelove came from someones acid nightmare, and Sterling Haydens character is still quoteworthy.

Well we have a winner.

It was changed from Dallas to Vegas.

Thanks Garnnet.

But from what I understanding watching the feature that came with the special edition DVD of that movie, is that the food fight scene was unusable because none of the actors where able to stay in character since they where so into the food fight and having fun, and that it was filmed on the last day the set was available so no re-shooting was possible.

Still the stills from the scene they showed where helarious.

Thanks, Homer Ken Adam was the man. He related the story that Reagan when elected in 1980 was very dissapointed that there really wasn't a "war room"

Dl021, I don't know about that, from the special feature, AFAIK he took a spill from the top of one of those fake bombs during filming of Kong in the bombbay.

Another reason why they brought in Pickens, if memory serves from my 'Art and Film of Stanley Kubrick' class I took two years ago was that Sellars just couldn't nail the accent. He WAS injured taking a spill off one of the bombs too though.

"Gentlemen, there's no fighting in the war room!!!"

Priceless movie, one of the five best ever done, on any list.

My dad and I used to use "Strangelove" as a test on dates we had, back before I got married. On about the fifth date, you find a way to watch the movie, and see if they got the black humor. My last girlfriend, now wife, loved the movie.

UTA (and Mel):

Get thee to a video shop!!! You are missing out on one of the very best films ever made. And the amazing thing is just how timely this cold war satire is in today's world still!

Peter Sellers was a true comic genius.

"... I don't avoid women....but I do deny them my precious bodily fluids..."

Gotta love the whole bodily fluids angle.

I especially enjoyed the B-52 set, fairly accurate given the lack of USAF support to the film. A B-17 was used to film many of the low level aerial sequences, look for it's shadow where the B-52s should be.....

Bad date movie, women hear the title and think it's a porno.

Actually I remember seeing a tribute to George C. Scott after he died, and apparently he thought that his Bucky role in the film was his favorite.

"Hello?... Ah... I can't hear too well. Do you suppose you could turn the music down just a little?... Oh-ho, that's much better... yeah... huh... yes... Fine, I can hear you now, Dmitri... Clear and plain and coming through fine... I'm coming through fine, too, eh?... Good, then... well, then, as you say, we're both coming through fine... Good... Well, it's good that you're fine and... and I'm fine... I agree with you, it's great to be fine... a-ha-ha-ha-ha... Now then, Dmitri, you know how we've always talked about the possibility of something going wrong with the Bomb... The *Bomb*, Dmitri... The *hydrogen* bomb!... Well now, what happened is... ah... one of our base commanders, he had a sort of... well, he went a little funny in the head... you know... just a little... funny. And, ah... he went and did a silly thing... Well, I'll tell you what he did. He ordered his planes... to attack your country... Ah... Well, let me finish, Dmitri... Let me finish, Dmitri... Well listen, how do you think I feel about it?... Can you *imagine* how I feel about it, Dmitri?"

Priceless lines....

My favorite part would have to be where that one guy (can't remember his name) is riding the bomb out of the airplane like a bronco. Classic...
