Movies That Deserved A Better Fate At The Box Off

Thu Feb 10, 2005 7:35 am

Good Afternoon to All,

With the Oscars drawing near, I think this is a great time to a topic going concerning movies. Below are three different lists of movies that I have been thinking about lately. Feel free to comment, add to, or subtract from any or all lists. BTW, this is the first topic I have started on A.net. Enjoy!

Movies That Deserved a Better Fate at the Box Office

1. Heathers (1989)
2. The Player (1992)
3. Bob Roberts (1992)
4. Bulworth (1998)
5. Thirteen Days (2000)
6. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)

Movies I Liked That Were Unpopular With Both Audiences and Critics Alike

1. Airport 1975
2. Terror Train (1980)
3. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
4. Waterworld (1995)
5. Spice World (1997)

Movies Whose Enormous Popularity I Fail to See

1. When Harry Met Sally (1989)
2. Ghost (1990)
3. Titanic (1997)
4. My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding (2002)

Ill add one to your "Movies Whose Enormous Popularity I Fail to See" category:

5. Napoleon Dynamite

Perhaps the dumbest movie ever created, I dont find it funny at all. IMO, its just dumb, thats all there is to it.

Thats all for now, I agree with most of your choices though.

Actually two stinkers at the box office I can think of that became classics where "Officespace" and "The Shawshank Redemption"

And if memory serves the Jimmy Stewart Christmas Classic, "It's a wonderful life" also faired pretty poorly at it's release.

Deserving of a much better fate: "Donnie Darko" -- $727,883 U.S. box office receipts through October 2004 including its second release.

It did £1,438,001 in the U.K. and €2,031,890 in Italy!

"Bulworth" completely passed me by somehow. It had a $10 million opening weekend, and when it played on cable, I somehow thought it had been a made-for-HBO movie (but a good one at that).

My best friend forced me to watch Napoleon Dynamite, and at the end I announced that it was quite possibly the worst movie I'd ever seen.

And then a few days later I found myself quoting lines from it! A guy rode by on a bike, and I said (out loud, even!):

"...you got shocks....pegs....LUCKY!!!!!"

And now I actually want to see the damn thing again for some strange reason!

Go fig.

Add "1941" to the movies that deserved a better fate.  Big thumbs up

L-188,

I would agree with about both of your selections. Those two, along with Heathers, became much more popular once they hit videotape and DVD.

USAFHummer,

"The Right Stuff" is a great movie. Definitely in my top 5 best films of the 1980's.

From 2000, the film "Red Dirt". A thoughtful storyline, great acting, and beautiful cinematography make for a fine movie.

I wasn't aware that "The Right Stuff" tanked so badly. Of course I was a bit young to see it in 1980 when it came out.

Another one that didn't do that spectacularly was the movie "Willow".

It's sad, I can't think of any and then I think of a bunch about 10 minutes apart.

So my list so far.

Officespace
The Shawshank Redemption
Willow
National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
OBAMA-WORST PRESIDENT EVER....Even SKOORB would be better.

I haven't seen enough movies at the theatre, but I find in general the bigger the box office hit, the more dumbed down for the general public it is. I like movies i have to think about, not movies that make me feel good.

As for movies going the other way Dances with Wolves was the biggest load of Bison shit ever.... yet it made $424,208,848 worldwide.

L-188..

Good one. Shawshank Redemption was a dud at the theater, and a major hit in video release and on TV.

I hated Dances with Wolves. It was too long and was too manipulative. Every movie Costner directed is like this.

I think the movie Fearless with Jeff Bridges was not a box office success. It was definitely a hit with the critics, though. Very powerful movie.

Big Lebowski (you have to watch it a few times)
Office Space
Rushmore
Shawshank

FutureUALPilot, I agree with you, the only thing that kept me watching Napoleon Dynamite is that it's the city my father grew up in and my grandparents and cousins live.

The Phantom of the Opera did well at the box office but it deserved to do better.

Here's one I really don't get: Shrek and Shrek 2. Am I missing something? It is meant to be funny isn't it?

Life as a House. One of the best movies I have ever seen. It barely made a dent at the box office.

Donnie Darko is my favorite movie...I was pretty sad to see it be such a flop in the box office. It's one of those cult movies like Boondock Saints though.
