Bermuda: Anyone Been There? Any Tips?

Sat Feb 12, 2005 6:48 am

Hello all,

Today I booked a flight to Bermuda for my girlfriend and myself for June. We will stay there for one week and have actually not planned to do much except relaxing on the beach.

However we would like to do two or three daytrips to see a little bit from the island. Can anyone recommend something which you must do when you are there? And can anyone recommend a good website? The www.bermuda.com site is not the best, there are more ads than information.

I heard that you can shop for duty-free prices on Bermuda, are clothes, booze, perfume, etc. cheaper than in Europe?

Also interesting: Are food and drinks expensive? The hotel is already ridiculous overpriced, I hope that the rest is rather cheap.

Not sure what time of year you are going but it it's soon, it will be pleasant weather-wise but not hot. Okay on some days for lying on the beach but maybe not every day.

Hamilton for shopping. Naval dockyard for some history. 9 golf courses.

Best way to see the island is to rent mopeds. Indeed, it's the only way to see the island thoroughly.

Have fun.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

It will probably be expensive. Pardon the obvious but it is an island and everything on it had to be shipped there.

Goslings rum - very good.

It is a cluster of very small islands. It may be many miles long but you cannot get more than a couple hundred yards from the beach.

There's a place at the Naval Dockyard that rents jet-skis, but its an hour long tour on the jet-ski rather than driving in circles... They take you all around the island, including over shipwrecks and feeding some huge ass fish. Highly recommended for a lot of fun as well as a lot of cool history.

Plenty of places offer daily boat rentals. That's a good way to see the islands at your own pace and without the crowds. One thing we did (since I like lighthouses) was to visit the two lighthouses-Gibb's Hill and St. David's. Both were open to the public, though I think Gibb's Hill is closed for repairs now.

Hi Sabena332,

I was there 2 years ago. It was a guys golf vacation.

Yes, it is very expensive there, but i must say, what a wonderful island it is.

I did no shopping whatsoever, but if you golf, try Port Royal Golf Course.

I stayed at the Fairmont Southhampton Princess. Wonderful hotel. But like you said, very expensive.

I'm sure you are aware that you cannot rent a car on the island. Taxis are the way to go. You can rent a scooter, but the streets are tight so i would recommend a taxi.

The people are great there. Practically zero crime and zero unemployment makes for a freindly atmosphere.

As for the website, is the best you are going to get.

Get your camera ready as you arrive/depart the island. It's a fabulous sight from the air.

If you have any specific questions, please e-mail me and i will do my best to answer.

Have a great time.

Andreas  Big thumbs up

Hey guys, thanks a lot for your replies, this is much appreciated!

Best way to see the island is to rent mopeds.

I read the same on some website, tourists can not rent cars but it is not a problem, I like to drive motorcycles.

It will probably be expensive. Pardon the obvious but it is an island and everything on it had to be shipped there.

Yes, you are right! Sorry but I didn't think so far when I posted this thread. Damn, looks like an expensive holiday.

There's a place at the Naval Dockyard that rents jet-skis, but its an hour long tour on the jet-ski rather than driving in circles... They take you all around the island, including over shipwrecks and feeding some huge ass fish.

This sounds like real fun and this is exactly the kind of trip I am looking for, thanks a lot for the tip!

Plenty of places offer daily boat rentals.

Can anyone rent a boat there or must you provide a "boat license" to get it?

I did no shopping whatsoever, but if you golf, try Port Royal Golf Course.

Sorry, I will make a complete fool of myself if I am trying to play golf Big grin. I will stick to soccer when I have to make sport by myself  Big thumbs up.

I stayed at the Fairmont Southhampton Princess. Wonderful hotel. But like you said, very expensive.

You stayed at the Fairmont?  Wow!. Last week, my girlfriend met "someone" who offered us a discounted stay at the Mandarin Oriental, the Mandarin Oriental is, despite of this discount, still overpriced so we were also looking for the fares of the Fairmont, I was very surprised that the Fairmont's fares were even more expensive than the regular fares of the Mandarin  Nuts.

As for the website, is the best you are going to get.

Damn  Angry.

If you have any specific questions, please e-mail me and i will do my best to answer.

Thanks a lot for your offer, currently I am trying to gather the most important informations. You can be sure that I will contact you when I have some specific questions shortly before we will be depart in approximately 4 months.

Again, thanks for all your help!

Patrick, Let me know when exactly you are going to be there and I will see if my friend will be at home. If he isn't it may be possible to rent his house for not much.

He lives just past Paget and not 10 minutes from Hamilton.
