Shop Timings In Your Neighbourhood/city

Tue Feb 15, 2005 2:20 pm

Guys, I have often heard that shops in some countries of the world close at 5.00pm or 6.00pm. Isn't that a little too early? I live in Dubai and shops/malls here close only after 9.30 pm. Some groceries are even open till 1.00am. I know Dubai is shopping city. But even shops in Bombay remain open till 9.00pm.

Just wanted to know what time do shops open and close in your neighbourhod or city?

Thanks, Olly

Most grocery stores until recently were open 24-7 (many still are) with the possible exception of Christmas day, most malls close around 9, some stay open during busy shopping seasons, a lot of small shops close around 6, but most are open till 8-10.

Where I live, a tiny ass town, the grocery store closes at 6:00pm, and is not open on Sunday's, which is really inconvenient. The Bank closes at 3pm and is open till noon on Saturday's.

Most shops and shopping malls here close at 17:00, open at 09:00 Mon-Fri. Thursday is late night shopping, and the malls here in Adelaide are open till 22:00. Movies go on till midnight, but sometimes the movie marathons go on the whole night.

Weekends the malls are open 10:00 - 17:00. Some grocery shops and most gas stations are open 24/7.

It kinds sucks when all the shops close at 17:00 on weekdays...won't have time to do anything as I get back home at 17:30  Sad

24/7 here. In Europe, I was surprised to see shops close in the middle of the day. They actually turned customers (and money) away simply because it was 2 PM. They'd open an hour or two later simply to lock up at 5 or 6 PM. What am I not getting here? Most people go shopping after work, so staying open until at least 10 PM makes sense and money.

One controversy going on in Portland right now is wanting to develop 4 blocks near downtown and another parcel of land near PDX. They want to put a Home Depot in the space near downtown and IKEA near PDX. Some people think this will drive the mom-and-pop stores out of business. I and some others say since Home Depot and IKEA stay open until at least 9PM, let them build! It is more convenient!

Back to the point: Department stores are open until 9PM and grocery stores until 11PM. Some are open 24/7. WinCo rocks!  Smile

Here shops close around 19:30 but malls are open till 21 and twice a week till 22...generally closed on Sundays. But I know that this in valid only where I live (Milano area) elsewhere especially in more touristic areas timing are different.

Most shops in Amsterdam close at around 17.00. Most supermarkets remain open till 20.00, while some of them close to the city centre stay open till 22.00. On thursadays , all supermarkets stay open till 21.00.

Most restaurants keep their kitchens open till 21.00, while some are open till 23.00.

As for the pubs in the city centre, they are open till 03.00 everyday. So even if there's nothing to eat, there's plenty to drink  Big thumbs up

Most grocery stores stay open 24 hours. Walmart and Kmart are always open.

Walgreens and CVS are always open.

Theaters have a showing at 9-10 PM most nights.

The mall closes at 9PM.
