Severe Snow Event For UK Next Week

Thu Feb 17, 2005 6:14 pm

All the charts and predicted models are pointing to a severe spell of cold weather for the UK into next week.
Worst affected areas will be the South and East but all of the UK will see some significant snowfalls.
Im not talking about a few cm or inches but feet in places in the South, also temps are expected to be -10 at best in parts of Norfolk and the south during daytime.
The brief cold spell has potential to last up to 2 weeks but so far we can only see accurately up to Wednesday, but even after Wednesday the weather is expected to be significantly cold.
Its all thanks to a plume of cold siberian air thats forming as i type, the cold plume will be forced across most of Europe Eastwards, hitting Moscow and Sweden first then the UK.
Just thought id give anyone in the UK a "heads-up" as its going to be pretty bad in some places, already the media is starting to pick-up on the story and it wont be too long before the shopping-rush starts.
The weather is expected to take a downfall early Saturday all the way into Thurs.
Its not the fall that kills u, its the sudden stop at the end..

C'mon, it's just a bit of snow  Big grin

If it gets bad maybe Canada should send a relief team to show you boys how it's done  Big grin ...I'll be the first to sign up Big grin

Lord knows we have experience with snow (pretty much everyday from November to March lol).

Seriously, I hope it doesn't get too bad over there. How often does the UK get snow storms?

It snows a few times every winter.

Thing is, the population of the UK is double that of Canada and since our total land mass is 97% smaller than Canada. Well you see, we have problems.

The UK is renowned for it's ability to grind to a halt in a few inches of snow. Oh goody  Laugh out loud

On the bright side, school may get cancelled Big grin

Los Angeles grinds to a halt in light rain, so I understand about the lack of coping abilities when it comes to snow.

I've ordered extra cat food, a sack of coal and a machete.

If the country grinds to a halt I can always eat the neighbours kids.

Ha!

I used to live in Manchester, and have been here in Quebec, Canada since October 2004.

Believe me, you boys back home don't know the meaning of the word 'snow'!

I've endured snow on and off now, a couple of times a week for months now!

I've fallen on my arse so many times cus of the bloody freezing rain (which I didn't know existed before I came here!) and even as I look out of my balcony, theres at least a metre of snow stacked up against the window!

Oh well, its all relative eh!?

Is there a source for this? I read this post, so I checked the BBC website and it has a nice big sun over me (Oxford) for the next 5 days. When is this bad weather coming?
Should I stock up at the market this weekend for fear of being snowbound for 2 weeks?  Confused

I need to get to the supermarket now, so that I can beat the masses panic-buying beans, Kendall Mint cake, candles and blankets. Honestly, if there is any snow that settles, the UK grinds to a halt and it becomes a major event as if a meteor was crashing towards us or something.....

Yeah, that's all it needs - a bit of snow. I have to get the train to work, and believe me, if there's so much as light rainfall or a few gusts of wind, it's their excuse to close down the lines. (I remember a day last year when I had to get a taxi because the wind was too string for the trains - I hadn't even NOTICED that there was wind!)

The problem is that the people who manage this kind of thing have never been anywhere in the world beyond Bognor, so they don't realise that the rest of the world can do this weather thing SO MUCH EASIER than we can. I live for the day where someone who has lived in Canada (for example) is employed to sort this out.

Looks like I'll be working from home next week then.

totally agree. Lived in Germany for three years recently, and I just cannot picture the Germans (or any other civilised country) putting up with it. They would laugh and then sack the buffoons that run whatever has f***ed up and then get it right. We just adopt a ho-hum mustn't grumble attitude. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! It's not good enough!

I actually think British people actually like things a little bit amateurish so that there is a sort of community spirit a la the Blitz/rationing etc so that we feel like we are pulling together in times of adversity....

It looks like there is a 40-50% chance of heavy Snow fall in the South and East of England (London).

2-4 CMs an hour which for London is a lot but compared to Quebec is a light dusting!

Should cause Chaos in London!

Gee, for a lot that takes the piss out of us Americans for American football and baseball, meanwhile expounding the toughness of football and rugby, with all due respect, it turns out you're a bunch of girly men. OH MY GOD, IT'S GOING TO SNOW.  Wink/being sarcastic

Sounds like a typical day in BOS, DTW, JFK, PHL, not to even mention MSP, BUF, DEN......

I was speaking to a cute English girl recently who claimed football was a tougher sport than hockey....please  Acting devilish

On topic: Sometimes I wish Canada wasn't so good at dealing with terrible weather. It would be nice to get work cancelled once in a while. It has to be damn near Armageddon for anything to close here Big grin
