China And Nepal's Ridiculous Timezones

Fri Feb 18, 2005 8:18 am

One thing has really surprised me when looking at time zones

1) China has the same timezome EVERYWHERE when normally given the size of the country it should at least cover 3 of them. So whether you are far west and far eat its the same time! More ridiculous, when you go from tajikistan to china its 3hr difference.....jet lag on foot!

2) Already India having a 30 minute time difference is pretty ridiculous....but Nepal wins the ridiculous prize . The have +15 minutes time difference with India

Could anyone explain me why that is !!!!!!

I never thought of this but it is freaking hilarious! While crossing this border you can indeed get a jetlag while traveling by foot Big grin.

I agree, these 30 minute differences are indeed ridiculous, but a 15 minute difference does take the cake! Iran also have a 30 minute difference, I am glad that I only transfered there and that I didn't have to set my watch to plus 2,30 hours  Nuts.

Strictly speaking, Malaysian & Singaporean time zone is wrong. If you look at the map, our longitude is roughly similar to Bangkok, which is GMT +7. Since the 1970s we changed our timezone from GMT +7 to GMT +8, which is the same as China (or "Beijing time"). This was done so that the two sides of Malaysia: Peninsular Malaysia (west) & Malaysian Borneo (east) have the same time zone. Even though 80% of the population live in the west (previously GMT +7), the whole country used Borneo time zone instead, which is GMT +8.

We are very close to the equator, so we get 12 hour daylight & 12 hour night time year-round. It should also means that our midday (sun directly on top of our head) is at 12:00. Instead, our midday is actually at 13:00. Clear proof that we are in the wrong time zone.

Back after WW2, the clocks in the Russian zone of occupation in Germany had to be set according to Moscow time, which is three hours advanced, and all life had to go according to Moscow time.
