How Safe Is Your City / Town?

Mon Feb 21, 2005 7:47 pm

Where would you rate the level of safety (on a scale of 1 to 10) in your city/town with regard to crime, riots or terrorist attacks?

[1=totally unsafe, 10=extremely safe]

I live in Dubai and the level of safety is quite high. I would put it at 9.

(Please mention your city)

Baile Atha Cliath, Eireann.

Population 3.5 million. I rate it 9.5 but can be less if you're in the wrong neighborhood Big grin

Sydney, and I will give it a 9, depends on the neighborhood, part of the city and suburbs are pretty dangers. I will give 9.7 for my neighborhood, quiet and safe area.

Adelaide, population 1 million, - 8 - depends on the neighbourhood...Hindley street at night, for example, would be 3 or 4.

Cape Town - population 2.5 million - 7 or 8. Its pretty safe, but there are rough neighbourhoods..like in any other big city.

Plymouth, South West England - 6. Poor because the city is overrun with 'swills' and 'burberry swills' who get drunk on cider then follow you round saying 'er bey, du yu wanna fite' in a jannerish accent. Worse even than Chavs Laugh out loud

Small town in Menorca, Spain - 10. You could go out and leave your house unlocked all day, only minor problem are the tourists in summertime.

Tampa probably 5 or 6. People think it is safe, but there is something like 900 violent crimes per 100,000 people. Pretty high! Miami is like 600 and New York 400. I live in a pretty good area though, so for me personally, probably an 8.

South Wales, UK.. population of around 2.4 million.

It is a fairly safe place to live, however there are some pretty bad areas wherever you go. I must say that I live in a very good area in general and so foe me I would rate it around 8/9.

However, on average I would give this area of the world 7/8 out of 10.

Chris

In a ranking of the entire USA, my city was ranked ninth safest. Sterling Heights, Michigan. It was actually seventh last time around, must of been a cat in tree somewhere. http://www.morganquitno.com/cit02pop.htm

The funny thing is, if you travel too far south, (you guys have seen 8 mile right? LOL) you end up on the top of the other list!

St. Louis is unfortunately #3 on the last...and we have tried FOR YEARS to top the list. Someday, perhaps, we might succeed. Until then, we shall at least take the top for stolen cars. That's pretty respectable, isn't it?

The current neighborhood of Portland I live in is great. I would say 9. I have seen some parts of North Portland that I would rate as 4. Everyone at work gives me deliveries to Chinatown at night. They are scared to go there. My co-workers say the homeless people are scary. Bah. I have never had any problems in Chinatown. People ask if I am looking for anything I just say "No, man, I'm good" and keep walking. What is so scary about that?

Hi there!

For all you British A.Netters, I have moved from Stoke-on-Trent UK
(Not a great place as I'm sure you're aware!)
to...
Sherbrooke, WQuebec, Canada
(A very safe place, except that theres nothing to do here apart from watch the snow)
SO I feel much safer here, you can go into a bar and just have a beer and read a book, you couldn't do that in Stoke without fear of being beaten up!

Thanks

Kieron.

I have been to Stoke-on-trent....not really a nice place.

Well I live in Bournemouth, Dorset population 163.000 (as of last census)
Overall I will give it a 7. loads of chavs and the town centre can get quite rough on weekends (drunk fights and stuff) and also depends on the "hood" but it is pretty safe.

With Manchester it really depends on where you are and when, for my part here in Astley (in the north) I'd say 6/7. Central Manchester I'd say 8 and to be honest I feel much safer in the city centre at 2am than during mid day.

I'm moving to my new job in Bristol in 3 weeks so I'll give my tuppence on my new home (for 7 months), I'd put it at 10 since it's just 3 houses (mine included), a school, church, pub and of course the airport  Smile

Hmmm

OK 5 for North Vancouver, but nothing people-related.

Bears wander through neighbourhood night and day; keep doors closed
Occasional cougar sighting; keep small kids inside
Skunks and raccoons abound.
Coyotes very aggressive; keep your cat indoors
Wolverine was spotted several times near the water
Owls occasionally mistake joggers for rodents and dive-bomb; can be a bit startling and somewhat painful -- especially if it's a great gray owl
Bald Eagles crap frequently; don't stand under tall trees.
Deer jump into the road; keep your eyes open and your foot on the brakes.

Other than that, crime rate is pretty low. Thieves wandering around in the dead of night don't live long.
Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Corona, CA: 9 (depending on the neighborhood)

Los Angeles, CA: The area that I live in (Westwood) is about an 8.5. Being a college district, its a good target for thieves (occasional stolen laptops, car radio, wheels) but not anywhere close to USC Smile.

L.A. in general can be anywhere from a 1 to 10 depending on where you go.

Wichita, KS: 9. One good thing about the city. It is still fairly safe even in the more run down neighborhoods in town, but there still are places where you need to watch your back (namely the north central areas). There's been a lot of buzz lately about BTK resurfacing, but the guy's probably a senior citizen by now so he's not much of a threat although he needs to be locked up.

Population 300,000

Just gotta know where all the junkies hang out. Some bright spark had the idea of putting cheap government housing right within stones throw (I mean that literally) of the city. I can't go into the city anymore without someone coming up to me asking for $5 so they can 'catch the bus' last time I caught a bus it was $1.20.

Where I live, probably a 9. In some areas of Bristol though its completely different. I live in a commuter Town so most people here are relatively affluent, although there are two large council estates that are a little worse. Generally though there is no crime here, not in comparison to areas of major cities etc.

San Francisco = 10
Keep in mind we are a city of about 775,000 residents (legal), about 100,000 not counted, another 80,000 homeless and then about another 300,000 that work here or just passing through, at any given time there are well over 1,300,000 people within these 42 sq. miles.
So considering all of that we still have less homicides, burglaries, assults and other crimes than cities less than half our size.

Boston, MA
Population (Metro): 4,5 million
Personal Rating: 7-8. Overall, living six years in the city there were very few times where I didn't feel safe. And I've walked around at all hours of the day. Of course there are certain neighbourhoods I wouldn't intentionally venture out into at night, but overall I could never say I felt in danger. Like Superfly said, Boston is a city of 600.000, plus another 300 or so thousand students, plus another couple hundred thousand commuters who come into the city each day and Boston is still a very safe city. Although the murder rate did go up 50% from 42 in 2003 to 61 in 2004. But spikes like that don't go unchecked.

Providence, RI (where I currently live)
Population (metro): 500.000
Personal Rating: 6-7. Believe it or not, I don't feel as safe in Providence as I do in Boston, a city 4 times the size. There have been some reports of muggings and beatings very close to my apartment shortly after I moved down here. That sort of freaked my mother out, although I can't say I've ever experienced or seen anything that would make me nervous. I just don't feel as safe in Providence as I do in Boston.

Tallahassee, Florida (8) 150000 people. Nothing happens here and we probably spend more than the average city on security because of the governor. The police in this rat town worries more about black loiterers than anything else.

If they cannot catch and apprehend underage drinking in a college town then they cannot apprehend anyone.

Hollywood, Florida (7) we have more residents than the state of Maine. This roachnest in South Florida is where French Canadians from during the winter. Nothing major has happened in this city since John Walsh's kid was kidnapped and murdered. The mall closed, the military academy closed, hell the other mall closed to. Our cops have a large transient illegal immigrant population under their noses and they dont do anything about it. If you want to rob you will concentrate out west, not here. If you want to terrorize people you will go somewhere else because the French Canadians or the other bad drivers will stop you in tracks.

Or the officers simply overlook it in most cases. You would be surprised how little officers care about underage drinking.

I think they should care. I personally have reported people for driving drunk, selling drugs and underage drinking and the cops do not do jack s###. I do not violate laws and I expect citizens to obey the laws enacted for their safety.

Well my area of town I give it a 8.9. I live in a gated community in the heart of Miami so right out side my walls of my area I would give it a 7.
But for the rest of MIA I give it a 6.9 MIA has its bad areas but the more wealthy tourist areas are some of the best areas there are. I would say there are more areas that are fine to go in than there are that you would not want to go through. I can only think of a few that I would never want to drive in. But many of the bad areas its not to bad to drive by them. Just don't get out of your car and ask someone for directions.

I live in NY. and work in NYC. I never think of crime. Like anyone from a big city, just be aware of your surroundings and there should be no problems. Hey, lots of folks get whacked in the hinterlands also. Crime ain't solely a big city problem.

I'd be more freaked living at some isolated ranch house miles from anyone than in NYC. At least we can call cops. Out there all you got is your wits (or maybe a dog)(and I would own a gun if I lived out there).
