Buying Medicine In Mexico

Thu Feb 24, 2005 5:28 am

Here in Mexico you can buy drugs which would usually require prescritption in USA, with no prescription. But how safe is it? has anyone ever done it before?

For the most part the purchase itself is relatively safe. I wouldn't say it's reputable, though. I have heard that the active ingredients in the medicines may be diluted, or non-existent. The US/Mex border pharmacies make good repeat business, so I'd say it's a seldom occurance.

A lot of old people here in Arizona go to Mexico for their medications. Good luck if you wanna drive above 40 down that highway.

It's basically the same situation in whole Latin America. For example, you can buy antibiotics w/o prescription. There's no problem with the quality of the product, the problem is that, when you're taking a medication w/o the guidance of a Medical Doctor, you're simply risking your health and maybe your life.

It's very usual to see people in our countries taking amoxicilin [an antibiotic] to fight a simple cold [without an infection]. Totally senseless and very risky.

But you can find a prescription drug 50% even 60% cheaper in Latin America than the U.S..

I'm sorry to say this, but that is a bunch of crap. As you should know, the pharmaceutical companies which elaborate medicines over the USA are the same in Mexico. Just the same. It may be hard to believe for you, but they keep the same standards of quality in doing so. Check over the internet if you want. Just one example, Pfizer produces the same medicines here than in America. They may change the name, but the rest is the same patent. If you buy Viagra over here, you would get the same "results" than with the America drug, just cheaper and without a prescription.

While you might be able to purchase certain drugs in Mexico or Latin America without a prescription, better leave them there if you are a US citizen and don't have a doctor's prescription for the medication. Otherwise DEA and Customs will be interested in you if you're caught with the medications. Federal law prohibits the possession of prescription drugs without a prescription from a licensed physician and transporting them over the border could get you a stiff fine or prison time. As it is, congress is looking to shut off the international prescription pipeline through new legislation.
