Do You Wear Your Seatbelt?

Sun Feb 27, 2005 6:03 am

How many of you wear your seatbelt while driving? I know a LOT of people who don't, if you don't, why not?

I have to wear mine. whenever its not on, I feel weird in my seat. Not weird of what could happen, but physically out of place.

All the time except when I'm at work as we don't have to wear them when driving around the airport and the speed limit is only 20mph and we are constantly jumping in and out of the cars for short journeys so there is no point.

I always do I also feel incredibly uncomfortable when I don't have it on. People who say it's a personal right are full of bullshit, since you're a danger to everyone else and are a cost to public funds.

I would say about 90 percent of the time. If I just local, making several in/out of car situations, I don't tend to use it. I know, I should ALWAYS use it. Even in a low speed collision, an emergency stop, or to get the best effectiveness out of the airbags, always should wear your seat belt. I have been in enough accidents or panic situations where the seat belt saved my butt and have seen too many situations where the use of the belt kept a person alive.

Always, always, always.

On duty, of course, it's a no brainer - condition of employment, safety, etc.

In my Personal Vehicle, that BAFDT, built in Canada, the damn thing goes DING DING DING every fifteen second it's moving unless I am wearing my seatbelt. I wear it anyway, but that crap is annoying when I'm just oving the truck 50 feet . . . .

Wearing your seatbelt is a smart idea. I have picked people up off the road (and put them in body bags) that would have survived an accident if they'd had their belt on. . . . . it's a no brainer. Not wearing your seatbelt is STUPID.

Indeed I do wear my seatbelt! I am first-hand experience of what can happen without one....

was in 2nd grade and riding the schoolbus, which for the students had no seatbelts, and an exposed metal bar in front of me. A DWI delivery driver rammed us from behind at 60mph as we were waiting at a redlight to make a left turn.

I hit the metal bar with my nose, giving me a pro-longed nosebleed and a near migraine headache that lasted a week.

So hell yeah I wear my seatbelt. Anyone who says it is a wussy-ass thing to do, is welcomed to try hitting themselves in the nose with a metal bar as hard as they can. Try it! It's fun!

As soon as I sit down in the seat my hand is behind my head reaching for my seatbelt. It's like second nature for me to put it on, and actually I feel very out of place driving or riding in a car without one. To not take the 2 seconds to click in is ridiculous considering the lives that seatbelts save.

ALWAYS wear mine. First of all, it's safe. Second, why not? It's not hard to put it on, and it's automatic. Third, I am a wild driver, so I need the seatbelt to keep me in my seat at ALL times  Smile

After attending a 5 vehicle nose to tail accident as an observer with the New Zealand Police, what I saw at the crash scene was not pretty. After that I have always worn my seatbelt. Also if I've got passengers in the car then I don't start driving intill they all have their seatbelts on.

The accident that I attended involved 1 truck and 4 cars. The truck was the 3rd vehicle involved, a front seat passenger in the car behind was not wearing her seatbelt and went flying throu the wind screen and got inpailed on a piece of metal on the back of the truck, she died shortly after. The accident happened on a busy state highway.

Always wear mine. I get in the car and naturally pull it over me.. In fact if I don't wear it, I don't feel secure, especially when I am driving fast...

I instinctively put it on as soon as i get in my car, or any other car for that matter.....it just doesn't feel right without it on. I can't even imagine not wearing one when i'm out and about in the company van (Chev Astro) as everyone here in Kingston seems to make a point of pulling out right in front of me just so they don't have to follow the van! Idiots.
Btw, i was in Fargo ND at xmas/new year and it seems like everyone in that 'town' makes a point of NOT wearing their seatbelts!!

Cheers

I have always worn a seatbelt. It goes on before the vehicle is put in gear and stays on until the vehicle has been taken out of gear. It's a consideration of personal safety and the law. Many states have primary seatbelt laws, while almost all have secondary seatbelt laws. The difference is that with a primary law, sworn peace officers can stop you for failure to wear your seatbelt as it is a primary moving violation. In states with secondary laws, they cannot stop you for failure to wear a seatbelt alone but can charge you with a violation if you are stopped for another moving violation. However, all states have primary laws requiring children of certain ages to be properly restrained while in a motor vehicle.

Should be a primary law in Alaska soon - I can't understand why it isn't already, but it is not.

I generally am pretty lenient with speeding tickets . . . . but when I see speeding and no seat belt - and God Forbid, your child isn't strapped down - it's a guaranteed writeup . . . right now . . . .

I use to not wear it but after my brother had an accident and the ONLY thing that saved him was his seatbelt (and well of course God because it wasn't his time)..I am a strong believer in seatbelts now......his car was TOTALLED and everyone said that his survival was a miracle and due to his seatbelt....so now I am a huge seatbelt advocate and campaign for it.....I think all cars should have an alarm like his that keeps beeping until you put the seatbelt on...thats the only reason why he wore it, because it annoyed the hell out of him, he put his seatbelt on and well thanks to that.....he is still with us.....

Every time I get in a car. I think ( no offense) that anyone that does not use their seatbelt is crazy. What a little bit less comfort and it takes maybe 1.3 seconds to put it on for something that will save your life. I have heard and seen to many accidents were people not wearing there seatbelt die and the ones using their seatbelt walk out.

During take off and landing in planes (also when turbulences).

In car: always, even if it's just a couple of meters. I'm used to it because I learned it during driving school and it's as usual as starting engine. But I start driving before turn on seat belt (ok, this is something I didn't learn at driving school.

I always put it on instinctively. Apart from being the law in the UK, it's common sense. Infact it's become so instinctive for me that just yesterday I sat in the car while my passenger went to run an errand. When she got back in the car, I reached for my seatbelt before starting the car, forgetting that I already had it on!

I almost never wear one, mostly because there are no belts in tramways, trains and buses. The last time I was in a car, in January, I did of course wear one; I feel somehow naked if I don't.

Always.

I had to install one in the first car (1961 Corvair) I ever owned that was street-legal. Fortunately the threaded bosses were already there as part of the body pan, I just had to punch holes through the carpet to get to them. I drive hard and would slide all over if I was not cinched down tight. I also carry a fire extinguisher. (Thank you Ducati for teaching me that one!)

I would favor a law that denied use of the taxpayers money for medical treatment of people who were not wearing theirs. If you refuse to wear one that is okay with me - I'm not the suicide prevention hotline, but not one cent of my tax money should be used to save your life after a crash.

I think the only time I don't is when I'm driving from one hangar to another one at our airport...other than that, it doesn't matter if I'm driving to TX or down the street for milk...it never hurts to wear it! Heck yeah I wear my seat belt!!!!!!
I was once going down the road and realized (after taking it off to dig for money while going thru a toll booth) I didnt have it on; I had to pull over on the express way to buckle up! I am also a firm believer that if you dont buckle up and your child notices this, he most likely wont either when he is driving.
It is a most odd feeling to not have one on actually! Almost scary! (for me anyways Smile )

I had a Ducati that would not run unless the gas cap gasket was missing. It would make a vacuum in the tank and the fuel would not feed. With no gasket on the cas cap fuel would run around the outside if the tank and drip on the head and exhaust.

If you've never actually had a fire between your legs, you probably don't fully appreciate fire extinguishers.

edit: Hey! That last sentence would make a good signature.
