Getting From LA To Valhalla, NY?

Tue Mar 01, 2005 6:16 am

Hi everyone,

So I have a medical schoo interview on March 30th at the New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY and am planning on taking the train there. I had a few questions for the New Yorkers on this board.

I know that I need to take the Metro-North Railroad (Harlem Line) from Grand Central Terminal. LGA seems too far from any rail service so I'm looking at either JFK or EWR (right now the LAX-JFK runs are almost $100 cheaper). So here are my questions:

Is EWR quicker than JFK in transit time?
If I go from JFK and take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station, would it be faster taking the LIRR to Penn Station and backtracking to Grand Central? Or take the subway to Grand Central?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

EWR would probably be faster to Grand Central. Just take NJ Transit or Amtrak to Penn Station where you can even walk to Grand Central. If you have bags you don't want to drag around, a cab is probably the best bet. It isn't that far, so it shouldn't be too expensive.

It looks like that based on the maps. The only thing though is that for some reason, I cant find a flight from here to EWR for less than $330. While orbitz has one to JFK for about $250.

So is the difference that much greater?

To save $100, I would probably go through JFK, because it is just a little bit more of a hassle to go through Jamaica on your way to Penn Station. Either way you end up at Penn Station, so I would just go to JFK if I were you.

Take a plane to JFK, take the Airport Express bus to GCT-something like $15 or so. From there Metro North to Valhalla. BTW: Have you looked at the fares going into Westchester Airport?

So I take it that the LIRR is better than taking the E train from Jamaica?

Yeah, it's $400 minimum to go to HPN. Not worth it for me. Besides, I was thinking about visiting my Aunt in Princeton, NJ after the interview.

Your flight arrival time, traffic, local weather, day traveling, etc, can affect your choice. You can get express bus services for about $12 one way (Less than 2 times that for a round trip ticket) from JFK to across the street from GCT. Usually the trip in moderate traffic will take about 1 hour. Do you plan to stay in NYC during your visit?
Also, for the trains, if not traveling during the morning rush inbound to GCT or afternoon rush outbound GCT hours for your interview, you can get off-peak one way tickets and save some money. Check the MTA website http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us for further info. For more info on transportation to/from the airports and mid-town NYC, go to: http://www.panynj.gov/avaiation and find the references to the airports and those pages with local transportation info.

Just my preference, I would take LIRR over NYC subway. Or you could go with what David b. suggested, that sounds pretty good.

LGA is DEFINITELY most convenient to Grand Central, by one of four means:

1) M60 bus directly to 125th Street station on Metro-North - all Harlem Line trains stop here ($2 - direct bus - I would consider this to save money - 30 minute ride)
2) nonstop on Carey bus to Grand Central ($12)
3) cab direct to Grand Central ($30)
4) cab to Astoria Boulevard subway stop, then subway to Grand Central ($10)

However, fly to JFK or EWR if you want a nonstop from LAX. They are equally (in)convenient to Metro North, no big difference

Also you should know that you'd be better off taking the train to the White Plains station, which is also known as the White Plains TransCenter, than to the Valhalla station. Why? Because almost every bus that you'd need to get to NYMC stops at the TransCenter, whereas if you go to Valhalla station, you'll have to either take a cab or backtrack by bus.

Hopefully by the time you travel, the labor/strike situation will be resolved...

NY Airport Services do stop on Park Ave. between 41st and 42nd Streets...I always see them when I'm walking down Park Ave from GCT to my hotel.

As for convinence, both EWR and JFK have trains into Penn Station...in a few years, you'd be able to take an LIRR train to GCT (once the access project at HAROLD interlocking is complete), and the subway from Penn Station to GCT is kind of impractical (1/2/3/9 to Times Sq., Shuttle to GCT). I'd say your best bet is to do one of the following: Take AirTrain to Jamaica, get on a LIRR train that stops at Woodside and connect with the 7 train there to GCT (the subway station is right above the LIRR station, you can easily see it) - note that not all LIRR trains stop at Woodside, or to take the bus, which is probably more convinient.

A follow-up to my post #9 -- looks like from the TransCenter you can take either the #14 or #15 to NYMC. I think the #15 might be slightly faster but in the past I took the #14 because it goes through the town I lived in (Ossining.)

If you want to do that, you should know that a NJ Transit train line goes to Princeton (the college campus), and connects with the EWR airport station. You have to make a quick transfer at Princeton Junction, but it's nothing complicated (same platform I believe), and the schedules are well synchronized.

Wow, so may replies. Thanks guys (and girls).

I'm going to narrow it down to EWR or JFK. Whichever flight can get me into either airport cheaper/earlier will be where I go. I guess then depending on my time of arrival, ill go either by train or bus to Grand Central. The walk from Penn to GCT doesn't seem too bad. Might as well enjoy 42nd street in the process.

If you want to go a little out of the way, you could walk north to Times Square and then east to GCT. Don't know if you have been there before, but it is a pretty cool place to walk through.

I would fly from LA to JFK. Take the Carey bus as a previous poster suggested to mid-town (41 st and Park Ave). Grand Central Terminal is across the street. Take the Metro North Harlem line to White Plains, NY. Depending on the train, (local vs. express), ride is about 40 minutes. There are at least 2 trains per hour. You can easily get a taxi from the train station in White Plains to the campus. Maybe a 15 minute ride.

As I'm sure you know, NY Medical College is on the campus of Westchester Medical Center--a major medical center so getting a taxi back to the White Plains train station for the return trip won't be a problem.

In my opinion this is the best way short of getting a taxi from JFK to Grand Central. This is a major interview so you want to be somewhat "relaxed" and not stressed from too many "trains, planes, and automobiles"!!

Best of luck. I know from my work in my non-A-net world that it is a fantastic school!!!

Sounds encouraging! Though I am in the later group of interviewees, so lets see how it goes.

I'm sure you know this, but BE CONFIDENT in the interview. I can DO this and will make the school proud. If there are "deficiencies" in the background (poor freshman year, etc.) be prepared to explain them in a "real" way. i.e. never been away from home before, parents divorcing, was sick, etc. gotta have something aside from "I was partying too hard". Really good program so best of luck.
