Commercials In The Movie Theatre

Thu Mar 03, 2005 1:44 pm

Hey folks, have you noticed car commercials and other advertisements being shown during the previews of the movies? I am not talking about the local ads displayed before the lights are dimmed. They are showing actual tv-style commercials just before the previews. I have nothing against advertising, but part of the reason for going to the theatre is to get away from watching the movie on TV. If they are going to allow ads, shouldn't the tickets be cheaper?

Cheers

I hear you there. Just last week I was having a conversation with one of my friends about how lousy that is. I am paying to go to the movies, not to watch TV commercials. I can watch tv for that. But if it's a way to make $, I am sure the theaters will do it.

Here's a pretty interesting site about the whole concept of ads before movies.

They have been advertising there forever. Before the previews, what do you think those are? Maybe it is just in California but they advertise before the previews.

I know local theatres sell add space usually to local vendors that are flashed maybe with some movie trivia before the lights dim and the actual previews start. But only lately I have seen commercials being shown along with the previews. It is a little more backwood in this part of CA, so it may have been going on longer in LA or some place.

Show up 15 minutes late . . . then they're all gone. If it's a first run, premier, then you're screwed. Got to get there in time to get a good seat.

I hate those bullshit Previews.

Know what else I hate, is a DVD that doesn't let you skip that shit. Got to watch all the "B" rated previews . . . . . damn I hate that.

Apparently it has been going on in Europe for some time, at least that is what I have heard.

It has been this way in Australia for, well - since I can remember.
It's nothing new - but annoyingly they have started to juxtapose the previews with the commercials so you never really know when the advertising has stopped until the actual movie begins.

While watching a car chase scene in a James Bond movie, an advertisement for an insurance company came up by "accident". But we still heard the sound from the film in the background. Quite ironic...  Smile

In South Africa the pre-show movie ads were always for cigarette companies - I used to love the ads for Peter Stuyvesant, because they were very jet-set and showed really nice places round the world, and always showed aircraft as well.
