Ten Pictures From A Recent Amtrak Trip

Fri Mar 04, 2005 3:39 pm

These are all pictures taken on Amtrak train #1, the Sunset Limited, en route from New Orleans to San Antonio. Enjoy!

#1: Climbing up the 4.4 mile Huey P. Long Bridge approx. 15 minutes after departing New Orleans. Weather was quite bad, but you can still get a sense of how high up you are on the bridge.

#2: Getting ready to cross the Mississippi River on the Huey P. Long Bridge

#3: An interior shot of my Superliner 2 coach car. The coach was about half full. As you can see, the seats are huge and are very comfortable. Picture came out kind of blurry, sorry.

#4: Lunch in the Dining Car. Yeah, that's me, and I have no idea how that stain got on my shirt. Oh well, no one gave me crap about it. It was busy in there...they had a waiting list going.

#5: The Superliner Sightseer Lounge Car. The bottom level of this car features a cafe where you can purchase snacks, as well as some booth seating. Movies are shown in this car in the evening's.

#6: A view of the back of our train in Lafayette, Louisiana.

#7/8/9: Since we were not carrying any freight cars today, it afforded me the following great shots (apologies in advance for the glare).

#10 A gorgeous Louisiana sunset in between Lafayette,LA and Lake Charles, LA.

Thanks Steve. My wife and I are thinking about doing the Coast Starlight from Seattle to LA. I wondered about the interior. These shots helped.

I cannot begin to make a big enough recommendation that you take that trip! And definitely go from SEA to LA . . . southbound. It's the type of scenery you'll see that is important in that issue. After dinner southbound, go to bed - wake up early and take in all the scenery in Southern Oregon and Northern California.

You really must get a sleeping car. If you can afford it, get the Deluxe Room, fully enclosed lav (with shower). If not the standard BR will suffice.

The absolute highlight of that train, for Sleeping Car passengers is the Pacific Parlour Car. Amtrak renovated some old Santa Fe "El Capitan" High Level Lounge cars into some very aewsome lounges for the Sleeping Car pax.

Brunch served nearly all morning, Cheese and Wine Tastings in the afternoon.

And of course, sleeping car passengers' meals are included in the price of the ticket.

I envy that trip . . . .  thumbsup  . . . go, enjoy the ride!

Interesting pictures. I want to take a train trip from PNS, one day before all the trains are gone. How long did it take you to get from MSY to SAT?
How many stops did you make? Thanks, for posting your pictures.

Pensacolaguy, MSY to SAT takes about fifteen hours. It stops in Schriever, New Iberia, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Beaumont, and Houston.

Of course leaving from PNS you would also stop in Atmore (since they don't have a rail bridge across Mobile Bay), Mobile, Pascagoula, Biloxi, Gulfport, and Bay St. Louis.

It's an interesting ride....tons of water crossing, lots of cruising through the bayous and stuff.

I'd love to post some pics I took on my last BOS-SF Bay area trip some 6-7 years ago..but..I can't seem to find them.

Took quite a few going through the Rockys and Sierras, as well as a few station stops in Albany, NY, Chicago, Reno, etc..

I met an elderly gentleman who boarded the eastbound trip in Sacremento and took the seat next to me. All dressed up in coat and tie. We didn't start talking for a half hour or so and I wound up sitting with him all the way to Boston (via train change in Chicago). Poor guy had just lost his wife of 50
years and was enroute to visit his son in Mass. Lots of stories to tell and I loved hearing him..have some pictures of him as well, and I wish i'd stayed in
touch with him.
