Best Way To Travel Within Japan

Sun Mar 06, 2005 5:34 am

For anyone Japanese natives or people who have been to Japan, I would appreciate some advice. I am planning on flying into NGO, and staying for four days. Since the World EXpo 2005 is here, I just want to get out of there. I am thinking about goint to Tokyo, and wondering what the easiest way is to get from Nagoya to Tokyo? I am trying to check out the train at http://www.japanrail.com/, and based on my findings it is $100, yet can't tell whether that is one way or roundtrip. Could someone please try to price it, because I am having trouble with it? Besides that, what other ways are there to get to Tokyo from NGO which are relaible, and priced reasonably?

Thanks

One of my buddies from Montreal married a Japanese woman from Nagoya. They travel from Vancouver to Nagoya quite a bit. He's an aviation buff, but he says the bullet trains between Nagoya and Tokyo are an experience not to be missed.

You'll probably have an answer by then, but let me get in touch with him and I'll post back as soon as I have some info for you.

Thanks for your help, Tranceport. I would love to take the bullet train, but from the website I linked, can't find which train that would be.

This topic is also interesting for me, my girlfriend and I will be in Japan in May this year and we have planned to fly from HND to Osaka/Nagoya for a day but on the return trip we want to take the bullet train.

No such thing as a return ticket on Shinkansen, just 2 one-ways so that price will be kata-michi (one-way) and it sounds about right at 10,000 yen.

If you are poor try the bus but it isn't much cheaper and who travels to Japan to ride the bus ?

How much travelling will you do and have you considered buying a JR pass ?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but I didn't hear from my buddy for a few days.

He says that it really depends on where in Tokyo you want to go. If you want to go downtown, then the Shinkansen bullet train is your best bet. He says if you are wanting to get to Narita, then for $20 more you can fly.

I just got a Japan Rail Pass. It allows me 7 days unlimited rail travel in Japan, and it was two prices, 28,300 Yen or 37,800 Yen for Green Class. I got the more expensive one and it was about $450.00 Australian.

Thanks for your help. I am considering going to Kyoto now, which is apparently a 37 minute bullet train ride for $54 from NGO. Can anyone reommend anything in Kyoto, or if it is even worth visiting? Otherwise, what cities which are fairly near to NGO are worth visiting, instead of Kyoto?

Thanks

Kyoto is definatley worth a visit as it is the Ancient capital of Japan so there are many historic sites to see. I can't rememeber the names and I'm just heading to bed but I'm sure there's many resources online about it.

Also, if you can manage I really reccomend going to Hiroshima. The A-bomb memorial museum will leave you speechless.

Also, if you plan on visiting some cities maybe consider getting a JR pass for 1 week. Price it out compared to actually buying tickets for each leg. Also keep in mind that having a JR pass is a lot more convienient.

There's 3 classes of Shinkansen
Nozomi super express (most expensive)
Hikari super express
Kodoma (cheapest, but also slowest)

With a regular priced JR pass you can get on the Hikari trains. I think the only difference between Nozomi and Hikari trains is that Nozomi trains stop less and I think are all Green Car trains? I'm not sure, maybe somebody could clarify. Nevertheless the Hikari trains are very fast and comfortable.

Hope this helps

I can't wait to go back to Japan one day

Kris

Nara is the ancient capital of Japan and far more interesting than Kyoto with a lot less tourists to boot.

By the way, when go you to Nara from Kyoto, there are two different types of trains to go between the two cities. I know that the private line train is a full-size "normal" train complete with air-conditioned cars, but I remember another option I rode in 1985 with JR using small, narrow-gauge electric trains that seem to run through everybody's backyard. I wonder does JR West still run this train, though.  Sad
