Kyoto is definatley worth a visit as it is the Ancient capital of Japan so there are many historic sites to see. I can't rememeber the names and I'm just heading to bed but I'm sure there's many resources online about it.
Also, if you can manage I really reccomend going to Hiroshima. The A-bomb memorial museum will leave you speechless.
Also, if you plan on visiting some cities maybe consider getting a JR
pass for 1 week. Price it out compared to actually buying tickets for each leg. Also keep in mind that having a JR
pass is a lot more convienient.
There's 3 classes of Shinkansen
Nozomi super express (most expensive)
Hikari super express
Kodoma (cheapest, but also slowest)
With a regular priced JR
pass you can get on the Hikari trains. I think the only difference between Nozomi and Hikari trains is that Nozomi trains stop less and I think are all Green Car trains? I'm not sure, maybe somebody could clarify. Nevertheless the Hikari trains are very fast and comfortable.
Hope this helps
I can't wait to go back to Japan one day
