Is "Shasta" Drink Still Available?

Wed Mar 09, 2005 12:41 am

Does anyone remember Shasta, a lemon-lime soda (equivalent to 7-UP), that used to be around years ago? Is it still around?

I spent most of my childhood in the hospital (in St. Louis and Indianapolis), and spent plenty of time in post-anaesthesia recovery rooms and ICUs after my frequent surgeries.

The nurses used to give me cups of Shasta to drink so I would have some moisture; I always saw the can on the over-the-bed tray table. It tasted as good, if not better, than 7-UP, and provided refreshing coolness and moisture to my parched, sore mouth (which was as often wired shut as not). I can just barely remember the colour or design on the can.

Please let me know whether Shasta soda still exists today. The last time I remember seeing it was at St. Louis Children's Hospital back in the early or mid-1980s. If so, I would love to taste it again, and would like to know where in the USA it is still made.

Thanks!

They made a pretty credible "Creme Soda", at one time. And that was the early 1970's....

Wasn't Shasta Safeways very old house brand, the one that was replaced by Craigmont and then later replaced by Safeway Select?

I am taking back my earlier comments in reply three.

Shasta was what Carrs used to carry up here before they where bought out by Safeway. Now they carry Safeway brands.

I don't think they sell Shasta up where I live these days. But I do remember it being sold in most grocery store chains in Arizona throughout the 90s. It was a step up from the house brands but still a step down from the Coca-Cola/Pepsico stuff.

I think when I was in a hospital in Passaic, NJ last month, as I was comming out of post-op, I was given a can of Shasta ginger ale. You may find it in 'dollar stores', some groceries, some institutional users, also under other names as a house brand.

Shasta is still available out here in CA at Winco stores. We get it all the time since I drink a lot of Cola and am not fussy about which brand I drink. It's actually pretty good, but we haven't ventured outside of the cola varieties.

Last time I had Shasta I was in a Hosptial room. I always think of it as the "Hospital Drink" since whenever I'm at the hospital visiting someone (not really that often) I see them carting those around.

My mother bought that crap for me when I was younger. She bought the variety pack, the orange, lemon lime, cola, root beer and a red one too. She tried to pass it off as normal soda to me and my sister. Then she bough diet Shasta for us. We never touched it..But that was at least 12-15 years ago.

Saw some (and bought it) at Big Lots about 2 years ago. Haven't seen it since. I personally liked the stuff.

Still available in Reno at Winco and Grocery Outlet. $2 for a 12-can box. My favorites are Diet Creme Soda and Diet Chocolate, but the chocolate is hard to find.

I thought "Shasta" is the soda brand associated with KROGER (largest grocer chain in the country).... or are they an independent brand? CHEX is Winn Dixie, I think... I forgot Publix/Albertsons/Vons in-house brands...

Kroger's is Big K, Publix just calls theirs Publix Cola, Diet Cola, etc. Shasta is like Faygo, one of the number of independent bottlers. A lot of the store brands are produced by Cott Corp. which is the #4 bottler in the US behind Coke, Pepsi, and Dr. Pepper/7Up.

I grew up in the SF Bay Area in the 50's/60's and left in mid 70's. Shasta was
a brand of soda products sold in just about every grocery chain, as I recall, as well as other retail outlets. Lemon lime was a flavor, strawberry, grape (my favorite), creme soda (2nd favorite) and maybe a few other flavors. It was quite popular as I recall. I don't know if there is any connection to what is available today.

The ad slogan for Shasta was "It hasta be shasta"

You can buy lots of Shasta at Winco still. Lemon Lime, Graprefruit, Root Beer, Creme Soda...they have lots of it. If there's a winco in your area I'd check there first.

That's all you DO see at Dollar Tree.

That said, anyone know if RC Cola is still available?
