Help In Finding Colleges Big On Criminal Science

Wed Mar 09, 2005 1:27 am

Hey US members. My daughter, even though she's only a Freshman in HS has shown a great interest in getting into the field of Criminal Science when she goes to college. I've looked online, but only get replies for online colleges. Anyone know where I can get a list of colleges/universities in the US that have good Criminal Science/Justice programs as a major?

Thanks in advance.

By criminal science what do you mean; forensics, criminal justice, corrections? There are quite a few possible majors and/or careers that could fall into. That might affect what I suggest.

If she is interested in the science aspect then a good biology major maybe with a sociology or pyschology double major would be a good choice. A forensic science specific major would likely combine elements from all three of those disciplines.

I wouldn't get all that worked up over which schools offer x major. Criminal science/criminology/public justice majors are fairly common to begin with. I would be more concerned about the school as a whole. You take less than half of your coursework in your major, typically 48 of your 120 units are major specific. You want to make sure that the school has a good gen-ed system, makes their students write a lot, etc.... And, most important, make sure it is a school that your daughter likes and will be happy to be at for 4-5 years. It doesn't matter if it is the best school/ program in the nation if she is unhappy and miserable.

If I am correct, John Jay College here in NY City is one of the leading colleges for Police Science and related fields.

University of Tennessee at Knoxville has an excellent forensics program for Criminal Justice. They're the home of the original "Body Farm". On a whole, UTK is pretty hard to beat as they have a number of excellent programs, Criminal Justice being only one of them.

I am not 100% positive, but I think that Sam Houston State in Huntsville, TX is one of the top schools for criminal anything. This is where the main prison in Texas is located, where most executions in the country take place.

Absolutely right. SUSU is one of the top, if not the best, college for Criminal Justice majors anywhere in the United States. I've only been over to SUSU once (about an hour away from where I live in Bryan/College Station) but I know several people who have attended and all said it is a good university. While not as large as Texas A&M or U.T., SUSU is part of the state's university system (specifically the Texas State University System and therefore is a state sponsored school just like A&M, U.T. and others.

Alpha;

I know you said US colleges, but I suggest you consider sending her to clean and safe Ottawa, Ontario. The U of O has an excellent and well-recognized criminology program, and even paying international student rates, you would likely save money compared to many US schools.

Here's the program website: http://www.socialsciences.uottawa.ca/crm/eng/index.asp

Ottawa is not that far away, either, when you want to have visits. Easy one-connection flights routed YOW-YYZ-CLE, going through YYZ's beautiful new terminal one.

Ottawa is a safe, clean and interesting city. Students complain that it doesn't have much of a nightlife, but as a father you should like that.  Wink
Next flight.... who knows.

Falcon....Georgia Southern has a good program for this, as does UGA. These are now tough schools to get into because of the Hope Scholarship Program here where any resident with B average gets tuition to school paid.

Let me know if you need an address to establish residency.  Wink

True but the drinking age is 19 and for an American that'll be fun and they are 2 hours from Montreal which has a huge nightlife and the 18 drinking age is just a suggestion. Big grin

Sorry I missed this one earlier . . . for Criminal Justice I'm prejudice since my degree in same is from Eastern Kentucky University. I know thats a little bit closer to Southern Ohio than you'd prefer pal, but one of the top three schools in the country for Law Enforcement . . . .

I'd also recommend University of Phoenix and Georgia Southern. Very respected Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice Schools.

EKU is in Richmond. I know it's hick country, but a great school. Of course, I got my degree in 1988, so who knows what has happened since . . . I don't even get the news letter anymore - I just wanted that "sheep skin".
