Yankees Vs. Red Sox

Wed Mar 09, 2005 8:43 am

Anyone else on here tired of the inordinate amount of hype these two teams get when they play each other. Yesterday they played their first Spring Training game and judging by the coverage you'd think they were playing Game 8 of the ALCS. Mind you most of the players in this game were minor-leaguers, and A-Rod, Jeter and others did not make the trip (I think it was only a split squad game for the Yanks). Still the amount of media coverage these two teams get is ridiculous. I mean I think they've played the clip of Varitek bitch slapping A-Rod about 3,548 times alone this month (an approximate figure). As much fun as that is to watch it's getting pretty old.

And it'll only get worse since MLB Opening Day kicks off with these two teams.

Anyone else sick of the media hype for this "rivalry"?

I love it! There's nothing better than watching a Sox-Yanks game, you never know when a brawl or something else interesting will break out.

I agree with you about the Spring Training game. I couldn't watch more than 2 innings of that game last night it was so boring. People were sleeping outside City of Palms Park for 3 days to get tickets to last nights game. Last year people were paying $500 for a ticket to a SPRING TRAINING game. That's an investment I'm sure they regretted a few minutes into the game.

While this is the best rivalry in pro sports, and I find it exciting, I am infact sick and freaking tired of hearing about it. Yankee Honk and Chowd Honk can all go jump in the ocean and bring all the media that are swinging from the teams packages as well.

Um...I guess we could talk about the Pirates-Phillies rivalry, or something. Any takers?

As a life-long Tiger fan now living in the east, I cannot agree more with the sentiment that started this thread. The attention given to the Yanks-Sox rivalry is excessive, no doubt.

That said, these are two icon teams. Like my Tigers, the heritage of baseball is on display when these teams play. But the over-attention given by the media outlets (ESPN in particular), and the cult of personality fostered by some of the key players (and owners) is what it is.

As one wag stated not long ago: "watching the Yankees and Red Sox game is akin to watching the Iran-Iraq war. It's too bad BOTH can't lose."
Maggs swings, it's a drive deep to left! The Tigers are going to the World Series!!!

It has nothing to do with talking about crappy teams Mark, but there are other teams out there other than the Yanks and BoSox. And yes, I would much rather hear about the Phillies and Pirates mixed in with news of hte other teams including the Yanks and BoSox, and not have the news dominated by the latter 2.

I can understand your feelings about this, but I have to admit that here in Boston, it's great. Like most everything else, it's market-driven. The Sox and the Yank-mes are the top payrolls in the league, come from two of the biggest markets, and therefore, this is what you get. We have gone through this in other sports, for example, when the Patriots sucked, and the Cowboys or the Steelers were all you could hear about back in the day. As a matter of fact, we still have to suffer through NJ Giants games every flippin' Sunday on Fox, because back in 1959, before the Patriots existed, people in New England rooted for the Gints. Eagles vs. Packers? No. Freakin' NJ Giants vs. Arizona! WTF? That's 45 years ago!

The fact is, the Sox and Yanks play great baseball games. Don't worry, times change eventually. Maybe the Brewers and the D-Rays will be in the WS this year.

Agreed. Too much attention placed on these two teams.

I'll be a lot more interested to see the National League East race between the Braves, Phillies, Marlins, Mets, and even the Nationals. That will be infinitely more compelling than a Yanks/Sox media frenzy.

Yeah I agree with the general sentiment here. The Yanks-Sox rivalry is a good one, but too much attention. As a Giants fan, we have a good rivalry with the Dodgers, and in local circles it can get just as intense as the Yanks-Sox games. But I do think the NL overall will be fun to watch this year, a lot of teams have made interesting trades so it should all be good.

Well then, guys, create attention for your teams! Start by posting about them.

Actually Mark, most fans (unlike Yankee Fans) don't feel the need to post about their team to show how much of a "fan" they are.

And Usairwys shouldn't even be talking baseball to anyone. Dude is a "Braves Fan" even though he dumped them last September and became an overnight Red Sox Fan. Now he has dropped the Sox and is back to being a "Braves Fan". Thats the type of loyalty usually reserved for Yankee Fans.

Not surprisingly, Mr. Cialini, you're missing the point. You don't have the major media, but you do have the power to discuss your, um, team. Are you interested in talking about them, or not?

Absolutely, and I talk about them with people I know are baseball fans. I also talk about all teams though as I am a Baseball Fan first and foremost.

Don't mistake my sentiment here for BoSox/Yankee hatred. Trust me, I love to watch when these two teams hook up, it always makes for an intense game, even if it's in the middle of the regular season. The fact that they're opening up the season with these two teams after last years great postseason is awesome. But having to sit through the endless national media hype and talk about this series is a bit much. It's like they forget there are 28 other teams in the majors. I guess it'll die down once these teams stop winning.

What, back in the '70's? Sports wasn't as well covered back then, so the massive amount of media attention wasn't there. I can't think of any other rivalry in the ESPN era that has gotten this much attention.

I think that's more because of Fox regional coverage. The Giants are just the closest NFC team to your area (unfortunately).

Well, for all of you who care (OK, Captoveur, post the empty room picture), the Sox and Yanks head-to-head games break down as follows:

April 6 games
May 3 games
June 0 games
July 4 games
August 0 games
September 4 games
October 2 games (plus more?)

Many here in Boston would like to see fewer in April and have them later in the season as the pennant race sets up. What the hell, it's a good way to get the season going, and they all count. Nice that the last three games of the regular season are vs. the Yanks at Fenway. Hopefully they will decide the division.

According to my eyes & ears, there is no such thing as too much Red Sox & Yankees coverage. I am a Rhode Islander (moving back in 2006) transplant to Phoenix (8 long years). There have been great Red Sox years (75,86,03 & 04) & not so good (mid 90's). I was sad when "Rocket Man" went to the Blue Jays, Boggs to the Yankees, Nomar to the Cubs, Derek Lowe to the Dodgers & Pedro to the Mets. I am very excited about Matt Clement, Edgar Renteria & Wade Miller! Red Sox - Yankees matchups are serious! Healthy recoveries for Curt, Wade & Bill!

I am also a sports fan, great to see MLB back in the "Nations Capital." As a Pitt Alumni, Go Panthers! Beat Villanova!

I also see how non-Red Sox & Yankee fans would be upset at the amount of coverage. I have the MLB 2004 WS DVD, if I were a St. Louis Cardinals fan, I would be pissed! There is less than 5 minutes of random Cardinals footage & about an hour & 1/2 of Red Sox footage. I understand that 86 years is a very long time between WS Championships, but the MLB producers could have spent equal amounts of time on the ALCS, NLCS, Red Sox & Cardinals. The 2004 NLCS between St. Louis & Houston was a great 7 game thriller as well! Just my opinion though...

Red Sox for life!

Tom

Well considering how the Cardinals didn't seem to bother showing up and got swept by the Sox with the greatest of ease, I could see how they'd only get about 5 minutes of coverage.  Smile

It was amazing that a good team like the 2004 Cardinals played so poorly in the World Series. Then again, I have never witnessed such a massive comeback (2004 ALCS). The Red Sox really turned it up a notch after being down 3-0 to the Yankees. The 2004 Yankees were a great team. For the Red Sox to win 4 straight games against the Yankees, wicked! I was stunned when the Cardinals lost night after night vs. the Red Sox (who commited numerous fielding errors).

Hey Cactus A319, I will give one of our 319's a pat on the belly for ya! Gotta go to work.

I still remember going to the '99 ALCS, game 2, at the Stadium, and it being one of the best sports events I have ever gone to. David Cone pitching for the Yanks, and Ramon Martinez (Pedro's brother, who yes, did play for the Sox also) pitching for boston, and Tino homering for the Yanks. Just a great game. Go Yanks!
