Help! Winxp Network Card Giving Problems

Sat Mar 12, 2005 5:58 am

I have a peculiar problem, I would love it if somebody could get me out of this rut.

My computer does not have online access.  Wow!

The icon on the tasbar that shows connection active appears, it is enabled. But whenever I start the browser, it acts like I am not connected, with the "detect settings error" window. So I go into network properties and click, 'repair this device'. Its says failure, that it could not retrieve the IP addy.

I have tried other LAN connections, wificard, safemode, and system restore: same result. I contacted the school's IT department but they told me to leave a msg and they will get back... Wow!...dude I need access now, this is the weekend before registration for fall!

What's going on? This crap is driving me absolutely batty.

RE: WTF? Who Know How 2 Deal Winxp Networks?!

Ok first do you have a firewall. If so make sure its not blocking your comp from being seen by the dhcp server. If it is, they wont be able to see you and give you an IP. Did this computer work online before, or is this the first time its being connected. It might be that the drivers aren't correct, or that cable or nic might be bad. Since it says its connected those aren't very likely. Also, are you supposed to register your computer with the school to get it on the network? I know here at LSU we can only register 3 mac addresses so maybe you've reached your limit and cant connect another one. If none of that helps, IM me and I can see what I can think of. My IM is in my profile. Best of luck.

I am not aware of any firewall stati on my computer, I do know the dorm network has its own firewall on the 'outside'. Yes it did work online connected via school networks before.

Okay.

Nope. Internet access is provided to all students living on campus. There is something called RESNet, which stands for residential network, I don't need it to be online nor care as much about it. It's optional.

3 per room? well we are only allowed 2 LAN jacks per room, most students have one computer (one of my suitemates went out and got himself a new laptop just so he doesn't have to lug around his desktop over the breaks  Yeah sure).

How do I access my AIM when not on my computer? I can't even get YIM.
