I used to have a HP laptop, damn the thing was sturdy, it could survive anything. Now I utilise the various machines in internet cafes and at work, and they're crap

Built my own desktop, in need of an a bit of an upgrade at the moment:

Elitegroup K7S6A
AMD Athlon XP1800+
256Mb PC2100 DDR RAM
Maxtor Diamondmax +8 40Gb HDD
Maxtor Diamondmax +9 80Gb HDD
nVidia Geforce FX5200 128Mb (yeah yeah I know, upgrading to Radeon 9600XT when I can afford it)
Lite-On 48x48x24x16 CD-Rw/DVD-ROM
Lite-On 16x DVD-Rw
Ancient floppy drive, surprised it still works
Generic 802.11b Wireless Ethernet card
Generic TV-input/capture card
JBL Creature II speakers (awesome!)
GNR Corp 17" monitor
USB Secure Digital slot
USB Webcam
A4Tech Wireless Keyboard/Mouse
Lexmark All-In-One X1180
Windows ME

The fastest CPU my board will take is the XP2400+, even with BIOS upgrade, so I'm torn between waiting until I can afford a decent new board to do a major upgrade, or keeping the same board and just installing a new graphics card, CPU and memory. And upgrading to Windows XP when I can afford it, obviously. I need a job.
Come fly with me, let's fly, let's fly away...

You think that's bad... you should see mine and it's not even a Powerbook.

Quoting 9V-SPF (Reply 19):

Wow yours is probably like a Porshe compared to mine:

Gateway Solo 2150
650 MHz Pentium III
6 GB hard drive (almost all of which is taken up by Windows XP)
512 MB ram
regular CD Rom drive

My only redemption is that it has one of the largest LCD screens of its generation. about 13"

And I paid $2500 for it in June, 2000. I am never spending that much on a laptop again. It's not worth it. You can't upgrade them and they become obsolete and cheaper so quickly. By December 2000 I saw laptops with 900MHz for the same price.

Acer Aspire G677 (but I changed quite a bit of things in it)

Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz
512MB RAM
80GB HD + 40GB HD
nVidia GeForce 4 Ti4800SE 128MB
Pioneer DVD-ROM
iOmega DVD Writer (12x/8x/4x - 48x, 24x, 48x)
17" LG Flatron F700B
Creative Inspire 2.1 Speakers
HP DeskJet 5550
HP Scan Jet 3400C

I've had the PC for around 3 and a half years now, but I love this PC. I added quite a bit of things since I bought it, but they were all worth it. My next new purchase of a computer will probably be in 2 years time before I leave for university - I plan on buying a laptop then. Till then, this computer is great and serves all of my needs.

IMO there is only one brand of computer to own..

DELL

I own a Dimension desktop P4 that I am upgrading to 512K. I bought and insatlled a CD burner drive and I just love it!

I also own a Latitude Notebook for my travel in the winter. It's a little old but it's a P3 that I upgraded to 512K and it kicks some ass. I got it on ebay with XP Pro installed for a bargain!

I have a home built Athlon XP2000 running Window ME. It's doesn't seem to be any slower than new Dell Pentium 4 I have at work and in some respects it's actually better.

Klaus,

Amusing? Dell is the shit in my book. All I touch computer wise except printers in which I feel HP is the tops.

Springbok747,

Apple is OK but getting stuff for it is a pain in the ass. Windows is fine, I find most people that run it don't update it all and have no security. Very bad mistake, the rate of growth for viruses and spyware is insane. If you have an up to date version of XP your fine.

I agree; And I´m really sorry about your book being soiled.

You don´t happen to mean "borrowed" games from your friends, perchance...? "Real" products for the Mac are easy to get and - contrary to Windows - painless to install, use and even un-install if you want.

Considering that I´m typing this on my third Mac and you´ve probably never used one yourself, what does that make you look like?
Never mind. Rethorical question. Big grin

I don´t know... I don´t think I need a low end game console right now. And lacking a proper OS, that´s all I could use it for...
