What Is A Vetrovec Caution? (Canada/Legal)

Fri Mar 18, 2005 4:19 am

In his judgement in the AI-182 case Justice Josephson opines: "I conclude that, even without turning to the need for a Vetrovec caution, a reasonable doubt arises..."

What is a Vetrovec caution ?

thanks

the so called ‘Vetrovec warning’.
That caution holds that as a matter of common sense, confirmatory evidence should be found before you rely upon the evidence of a witness whose testimony is central to proving the event, and whose credit (trustworthiness) may be suspect. In such a case, you should view the testimony of that witness with great caution, and it would be wise to look for other supporting evidence before relying on that evidence to convict an accused in a criminal case.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Yu138086, it does help. Googling with Vetrovec warning led me to this website which has an explanation.
