All this time you naively thought that the concentrated keyboard tapping you heard coming from behind all those screens (which you can't see from where you are sitting) around the meeting table was actually frantic notetaking!!!
HELLO!!!! Why do you think meetings are such an unproductive waste of time.
The real decisions are made by a couple of key people (such as the mailroom clerk and webpage work experience kid or intern) in the john afterwards (in between seeing who can pee highest up the wall).
People only go to meetings to catch up with their online forum and chat friends, check out how their eBay bids and sales are going, and to download pre-release DVDs. They can't do this at their desks because someone may unexpectedly catch them at it and then have to file all that paperwork about inappropriate use of company IT
So meetings are the understood safe havens for these activities.
It is mentioned in the Geneva Convention on Acceptable Corporate Activities, probably somewhere between legitimate use of travel and expense accounts and how to account for bribes as consultant and facilitation fees.
