Explosion In Doha!

Sun Mar 20, 2005 3:51 am

There was an explosion in Doha, felt my windows shake 30 minutes ago. It is reported to be at the teachers apartment blocks at DESS (Doha English Speaking School)

EDIT: This is a school about 10KMS from my house, and it is an elementry school. This is not good for Qatar, a country that has never seen anything like this before. The only thing remotley close was the killing of a Chechneyan leader here, who was taking political assylum. The apartment block is part of the school.

Aljazeera is reporting that an easter concert was taking place in the school, a friend of mine just confirmed it.

No idea who it might have been, but my guess is terrorists who want to scare off Westerners from here - Qatar is one of the safest countries in the Gulf, this is gonna have some bad effects.

Now I heard its in Doha Players, a theatre near DESS. I am hearing lots of different stories here, nothing apparent yet, but DESS and Doha Players are close to each other. I will tell you guys if I hear anything new.

Since you live there, and you have more knowlege of the area, would you suspect it to be Al Queda or just some other radical terrorist group?

There are absolutley no terrorist groups in Qatar, which is why I am so surprised. I have no clue who would want this, but their motive is quite obvious, and that is that they want to scare of Westerners from Qatar. Apparantly its a car bomb.

Well, I can tell you one thing: Everyone here is in shock. An English teacher from my friend's school has been confirmed dead, and it is something we have not seen here before.

The American Embassy has issued orders that the ASD (American School of Doha) should remain closed tomorrow, and they just called us to inform us (my two sisters are students there). My school has not said anything although I am not going, so is everyone else I have talked to.

Well, it seems what happened was that the explosion took place at the Doha Players theatre, where a Shakespeare play was being performed for Easter. The auditarioum had around 75 people in it AFAIK, with many Arabs and Westerners present. The bomb was felt almost everywhere in Qatar; I actually felt my window shake, and a guy I know eating at a nearby McDonalds said that the windows all came crashing down. The official numbers seem to be 1 dead and 12 injured, with only 3 remaining in hospital. I believe that this is downsized, but who knows? Some sources reported 50 injured, some as low as 4.

Things will probably be clearer tommorow, as today it is mostly nothing but speculation and rumors being thrown around.

Somebody is interested in destabilising the region (check yesterday´s bomb in a residential area in Beirut).

Sky News is reporting one Briton killed.

Qatar isn't known for anything like this. I wouldn't be at all surprised of the suicide bomber is not a local.

Let me rephrase that: there is no local active terrorist groups, i.e. Qatar does not have any raging extremists screaming about wanting to see America die like in Saudi. We have never had anything like this, and by that statement I meant that the group that carried this out is probably from outside Qatar.

The car that was used for the bombing has been identified as being owned by an Egyptian. Apparantly, the man left home yesterday morning and never came back. Strange stuff...

My sisters had nothing to do with the play, they were both safe at home at the time of the bomb (thank God). All I was saying was that their school, the American School of Doha, was closed today, as was our school and all other British schools here in Doha. We are not sure how long our school will be closed for, as all the school has said was "until further notice".

I can also vouch that there are not radical extremist groups in the most parts of Jordan. You really find them to the east in Iran or you find them to the south hiding inside of Israel waiting to attack Israel. Yet it's the fact where you are is what makes you so open to attack if you live in Jordan even if you don't have any extremist groups in your country or city,

I live in Qatar, not Jordan. He was referring to Qatar.
