Storm Season - 1st Chase For The Year

Tue Mar 22, 2005 9:38 am

Well spring time is here in Oklahoma and since i'm finally back after being in freezing Ohio for another 3 years...I had to take advantage of today. Just a quick warm up chase...didn't even have all the equipment ready for this (still in boxes from the move). Pics here... http://flytoledo.com/gallery2/main.p..._view=core:ShowItem&g2_itemId=2638

Left Norman down Highway 9 out to the east around Seminole / Cromwell, OK. Got off the main roads after going through a small hail/rain shaft...nothing too major. We photographed the following about 4 miles east of Seminole, OK...

This is a view of a fairly large wall cloud and associated funnel cloud. This funnel, from prelim reports, did not touch down but did mess a roof or two up in Cromwell.

Another view of the storm over Cromwell with a massive rainbow low to the ground. After this shot we went on to Cromwell. We arrived in a location that had just got blasted by hail up to quarters and golf balls when we came upon one of the most annoying things of chasing today - a cluster of people on the side of the road. We continued on about a half mile past and came upon this...

After watching significant rotation of the scub in the storm that passed over the road we were on, it dropped a small rope tornado to our north - about a half mile away. This short lived rope even regrouped into the funnel in the picture above. This funnel tightened up a bit as in the next picture...

This funnel never reached the ground as the circulation eventually died out and reformed about a mile further east. This is where we broke off the chase as it was starting to get into more heavily wooded areas of Oklahoma - and my friend had to get to work. LOL

All in all I'm pleased as this was a good first chase - my first in 3 years - and rewarding warm up.

Be careful out there!  hypnotized  will get you  knockout

I chased *once*... yes, once was enough because I got caught in a core punch in a severe thunderstorm and realized that if there was a tornado I wouldn't even see it. I was on I-71 southbound in Cleveland/Brooklyn near the northbound flyover exit to West 65th Street.

Ever since then, I've kept a relatively healthy distance. I've got four weather spotting places -- Severance Town Center (large wide open raised parking lot), KCLE (of course, 2 mile diameter cleared space), Chagrin Boulevard near Woodhill Avenue (coming down off the Murray Hill bluff) and one of the hotel parking lots in Independence (wide open view of the entire west side of Cleveland and most of the north and northeast sides as well.)

Up, up and away!

I have always been fascinated with weather and I think those pictures are cool. That movie Twister started my fascination with Tornados specifically. But if you happen to catch any F5's please post!!
