Overhaulin' Vs Pimp My Ride

Sat Mar 26, 2005 1:36 am

I really enjoy both shows, but as a purist, I have to say that I like Overhaulin' the best. They have put out some incredible jobs on that show. Overall, I still love the reactions of the owners on both shows.

What's your fave?

I'm NOT in the "Pimp My Ride" demographic, I'm afraid. I DID TV channel surf in one day, and they were doing a VW bus, that came out, pretty nice.....

Overhaulin' is cool. There are getting to be so many of these shows I tend to mix 'em up. Is this the one where they went nuts w/a 1976 Datsun B210 "Honey Bee" and put some super motor in it? I laughed so hard I almost hurt myself watching it!

I don't like the idea of Pimp My Ride.
I am a purist and I like everything stock from the factory. I hate it when I see what was once a nice 70s car messed up with aftermarket spinners, rims, and steering wheels and all. That is a disgrace to the vehicle.
Fortunatley its just the Cheverolets that get messed with.
If the mess up a Lincoln, I will have a fit!

Doesn't sound like something Overhaulin' would do. They are all about bringing the vehicle back to it's glory. And sometimes even better than that.

Overhaulin' is the one that stars Chip Foose. The BIG difference between what they Pimp My Ride and West Coast Customs and Overhaulin' and Chip Foose, is that Foose is talented, he is an artist, and not a hack like the folks at WCC. And while I don't always dig the work that Foose does, he definately has talent. Whereas the WCC's answer to everything is big rims and big stereos.

I don't know Overhaulin' but Pimp My Ride is a great show, these guys from West Coast Customs have really crazy ideas!

I really like PMR because they take cars that are almost on the brink of undrivable and turn them into a vehicle that almost could pass for NEW! Whereas the Overhaulin guys take a car that is "OK" and turn it into something even better. Now don't get me wrong, I love Overhaulin'. I just think PMR makes a lot more out of a lot less!

Like I had said, there are w-a-y too many of these types of show on, these days. I wish The Discovery Network/TLC/History Channel would get back to something OTHER than shows like this. A few are cool, but they all blend together.

You have shows about Boyd Coddington's Hot Rods, the twin guys who give teams two cars to race, those American Choppers folks, rides getting pimped, and on and on and on.

I'd like to see a 'This Old House' like show for cars.
I'd like to see them take a car that's been rusted and or dinged up and fix to it's original state.
That's a lot more realistic and views could connect with this much easier.
Have you guys seen the garage they us on the Hot Rods show?
It's clean as a whistle and they have got more tools than your local Ford dealership repair shop.
You're average Joe with a Valiant up on bricks in the back yard would never be able to have that kind of money to rent out a wharehouse like that and be able to make his own glass windsheild, fender, etc..

I'm amazed this has never been done. There is a show on "Spike" TV for vintage trucks, that is along those lines.

In Tampa, a few years back, there was actually a radio call in show about classic cars, on a little AM station. I used to submit trivia questions for them to use. It was like that NPR show, "Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers" from Boston (our fair city) mass.

Shoot, if someone can come up with a radio show for cigar smokers, a national old car show shouldn't be a hard sell.

Actually there is that kind of show on Speed. I think it is Hemmings Garage, or something like that. It has the old host from My Classic Car plus a bunch of guys from Ontario. They regularly show ground up restorations of classics on that show. They don't exactly take an old beat up Dart and restore it to like new condition, but rather take something that is worth a few bucks and do that.

Isn't that what the show American Hot Rod with Boyd Coddington does?

PS: I like Overhaulin' better. They take a car and basically restore it and make it look like a classic car again, while Pimp My Ride takes a car and puts all kinds of weird interiors in it and paints it in colors not many people would like.

Im a fan more of PMR exept for one thing. They only fix how the car looks. Very rearly do they touch the engine. on Ovehaulin, u know that after you get your car back it will have a new engine and will run for many miles. To day i was watchin how they pimped an old 89 chevy and that thing must have had over 250K miles. Its not worth to put over 20Gs in a car that will run for another 1 year tops.

But if they fix the enige then ignore...

Actually the episode where a Datsun Honey Bee was transformed into a super drift car was Jesse James's "Monster Garage." They ripped apart a brand new(ouch) Nissan 350Z and threw the motor into the honey bee.

The show with the twin brothers airs on the History Channel and is titled "Full Throttle."

The Speed Channel began airing in February a show called "Unique Whips." Unique Autosports does basically what West Coast Customs but they are located on the east coast on Long Island.

I really like "Overhaulin." They do almost a complete concours restoration on a vehicle in seven days. It's simply amazing. I like how Foose keeps the body lines of the old cars but puts modern tires/wheels/brakes/suspension and engines in them.

BTW....does anybody know why Chip Foose and Boyd Coddington split on such harsh terms??? I know Chip and Boyd used to be partners.

Actually, I think they do. They just don't show it. Not as glamorous as the rest of the stuff they do to the producers I guess. I've seen a couple episodes where the thing barely made it in, and in one case, had to be pushed in, then at the "unvailing" it was running like a top.
