Purchasing Egyptian Pounds Outside Egypt?

Sun Mar 27, 2005 1:07 am

Is it possible to purchase Egyptian pounds prior to arriving into Egypt? The last time I went to Cairo (I stayed there for a month) I converted GBP into Egyptian pounds. The reason I want to convert them beforehand is that there's a very high amount of Egyptian pounds to GBP - nearly E£11 for £1 GBP. It was nearly E£12 for £1 GBP, but it is slowly going down now.

When visiting Egypt with my mother 39 years ago (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Alexandria) I entered illegally Egyptian currency bought in Switzerland. We had a very nice time my mother and myself because we had so much money to spend. When entering Egypt in Cairo airport I had the banknotes hidden in a medicament tube. It was so funny. I remember when in our hotel in Luxor we had a carriage with two horses (one white and one black) waiting down for us to make us visit the famous ancient monuments. It was a such a nice time. yes  Do not worry for me, now I change my money only lawfully.

Cheers. Kilavoud.

Gkirk, what a joke this oldman picture. My youngest daughter is only 9 years old and I am only 62.

Cheers. Kilavoud.

Hey Pe@rson! I remember 2 years ago officially you were only allowed to take 200LE with into the country, the rest had to be in foreign currency (i.e. you were 'forced' to exchange your money in Egypt). Now this wasn't strictly inforced and I'm not sure if it still applies now. I always change my £s in Egypt simply because I get much better deals there (avoid bureau de changes located at hotels and travel agencies).

Thanks. It is rather annoying though, as when I was last in CAI it was about E£5.98 to £1 GBP, but now it's nearly E£11 to £1 GBP - and it was nearly E£12 to £1. I bet it will go down to E£6-7 per £1 GBP come June.  Sad

Yeah a few years ago £1=5.50-6.00LE but then 9/11 had a dire effect on Egyptian economy (mainly due to the drop in tourist numbers). In addition in 2003 the Egyptian goverment pegged the currency on the market (rather then having it fixed) which further depreciated its value reaching an all time low of £1=12.35LE in February/March 2004. Anyway since then (with the introduction of radical economic reforms) the Egyptian pound has began to get stronger (currently £1=9.96LE). But don't worry it won't reach 6-7 by June, the economy is not doing that well, it will probably go down to £1=9LE at the most.

Well, I suppose that isn't too bad. Nothing like trying to get as much for your GBPs.  Wink

Horus: a friend of mine is going to CAI at the end of March. She wants to know whether there are ATMs at CAI (the airport). I can't remember. Do you know?
