I'm sure all of you have had a more terrifying event happen to you, but seeing as I am still on an adrenaline rush from what happened, I'll tell mine anyways. I'm a member of my high school's freshman crew team, and we have been having two practices in the same day since spring break. So today, on our second practice at 1 PM
, we had already been warmed up from the first practice. Our coach had us row 5 five minute full-power pieces. We sprinted up and down the river, and began our fourth piece around 2:10 PM
. Our coach was on a "launch boat" commonly known to you guys as a small boat with an even smaller motor on it. We got a distance from him going full speed when my friend Justin, behind me on the boat, yells "Guys! Behind you! Coach just fell in the water!" I look to see that our coach is scrambling to stay afloat, as the launch boat was in a tight spin. He tried to get back on, but couldn't. We lost sight of him, the entire time is shock that this was happening, and then realized that we had to go save him. Our team must have made the tightest turn around with our boat EVER, and began to sprint in his direction. That's when we saw him barely able to stay afloat, swimming to a life vest which (thank God) had fallen out of the boat. He grabbed on, but it really did nothing to keep him afloat. We then reached him, and stopped rowing. The water was below freezing, he was shivering, and there was blood all over his teeth and mouth, as he must have been hit. He told us he had to get to shore quickly or he might go into hypothermia. We tried as we could, and managed to bring the boat close enough for him to reach it. Luckily the park police were there, but for whatever reason, the cop decided he was going to just stand there and watch. After he reached shore a score of fire rescue vehicles were on scene, and were just about ready to jump in the river to save him when they saw him on land. Luckily, he was ok, and never had to go the hosptial. It was still a very frightening affair. Have you ever had something happen to you like this, where it just seems like you're dreaming?
