Megabus Longhaul Uk, NCL-LON

Tue Mar 29, 2005 6:53 am

hey, has any of you travelled long distance on megabus in the UK? ITs only 2.50GBP return from NCL-LON inc. And i know I cant expect much the the cost of a cider, but is the comfort reasonable? Only pics of busses (not tht im a bus fan, !) seem to be normal cross city commuters kitted out with high backed seats. Would this be bearable for the 7hrs to London??

I've travelled from Sunderland to London Gatwick on National Express, which took 9 hours. I was travelling alone, and I would never do it again. I would rather spend another £66.50 and fly BA to LGW in comfort.

They have some services around Manchester too, see them on the M6 heading down to london, they look ok, double deck bus/coach things, certainly not tin cans on wheels. Not that different to national express except the price. For £2.50 i think thats fantastic!

They seem to have both commuter buses with high back seats and proper double-deck coaches. I'd have thought that the less comfortable vehicles would be used on shorter runs such as LON-Brighton.

You'll never catch me on any kind of coach for 7 hours but I think the concept is superb!

Used them a couple of weeks ago from Cardiff to London and return. Chose them because a train return was £120, National Express £30 and Megabus £18.

Just like airlines they subcharter their services....

When the bus arrived at Cardiff to collect me, then I found out it was an ordinary double decker, similar to those used in London - branded as London 2012 Back the Bid - it was not a Megabus....

This meant the trip was s l o w ,aided by some traffic woes, we arrived over an hour late into London.... bus performed poorly on hills on the motorway.

Homeward bound, trip was on a Megabus. Much better timekeeping (arrived early), seemed to be faster on motorway, but comfort was not so good... a little less legroom.

At Victoria on the way back when waiting for my bus, it was clear there were other Megabus services on other carriers and not on 'intercity' type coaches.

Both trips, bus was less than half full so you had two seats to 'relax' on.

In summary... cheap, but don't rely on them for timekeeping or to be on one of their branded vehicles. A full bus would be very uncomfortable.

lol,. i chickened it out! lol, im going ot Belfast on EZY! its costing me ten times as much as Megabus to london (still, just 25GBP!!) but its 40 mins, safe, clean and comfy. I love easyJet!! lOl, i was needing to go to London for interview for my m-1 training Visa for the USA, but upon booking this interview today, i was told I can use the US Consulate in Belfast, so its a heck of ot easier to jst hop over to NI for a few hours! i must admid the ideda of hours in a glorified commuter bus does not appeal to me!

I make a point of not travelling on any of Brian Souter's Stagecoach group services if there is an alternative.

WhiteHatter - I think I know some reasons why, but but perhaps you can tell everyone else why you would avoid Stagecoach....

Cheers

i would avoid them as the owner is openly homophobic, its a disgusting. I had no idea theyre were stagecoach, and he gets away with it. Another example of britain gone mad, if he said what he said about a particuar racial group, there would be hell on. And dont anyone say 'yah, but a lot of ethnic people travel stagecoach', as us homosexuals accoutn for 10% of the population, and potentially 10% of passengers. Stagecoach were denied a travel officec in my Uni for this reason

Hmmm, price is quite good. But it takes too long. If I had to travel from NCL to London, I'd rather get a plane or train. May not be as cheap, but its faster...
