World Cup Qualifier Matches Tonight (30/3)

Thu Mar 31, 2005 5:33 am

Current scores - at half-time:

Poland 0 - 0 Northern Ireland
England 0 - 0 Azerbaijan
Wales 0 - 0 Austria

Quite surprising! I do expect there to be goals in the second half, especially in the England v Azerbaijan match. There have been quite a few opportunities in the England match, a few of which were very good shots. But, alas, no goals. One did, a minute or so before half-time, go in, but it was not allowed due to it being off-side. Not a particularly exciting match so far, at least in my opinion. Remember what happened in the second-half against N.I. last weekend?

Horrific. England just cannot convert chances and the majority of the blame lands on the shoulders of Michael Owen. Why he went to Real Madrid we'll probably never know...

And Denmark lost 0-1 to Ukraine and will most likely not play in the WC 2006. God damn I Was so pissed after the game. Denmark has really been playing bad in this qualification round. They really don't deserve playing in the WC after their lousy performances.

This is funny. Carlos Alberto (Azerbaijan's coach) has thrown his toys out the pram big style over a total misunderstanding of what he thought Michael Owen said. It's absolutely hilarious, especially as Owen was totally innocent! Big grin

Don't lie, Kirkie. I know you care passionately about England. You passionately want them to lose, but you DO care.  Big grin

Anyway, it looks like both England and Poland should qualify unless they screw things up badly, the way the group is going, and the way the other groups are going, suggests that whoever finishes second should also qualify automatically.

And isn't it amusing how badly France are struggling?

0-0???!!!

Terrible match, and we lost two points there. I only hope we can beat Belarus and Slovenia on away ground. Then there is the meet with Italy in Oslo... that should be easy...  Yeah sure

Could be!  Big grin But you've got to improve a bit more yet. That thumping from New Zealand was embarrassing.

Now, tell me something: Is it written into the contract that French coaches have to be completely bonkers? I mean, Bernard Laporte is completely certifiable, and Raymond Domanech started going on about the star signs of players recently? Do you collect them from the loony bin and give them a national side? What's going on?

Where so you think Johnny Wilkinson learnt his technique?  Wink

I don't know that it's fair to say Waddle never got a chance with England though. He got 62 caps, so he was hardly under-used. He was just one of those long line of England wingers (like John Barnes) who didn't quite do at intrnational level what he did at club level. A bit like Thierry Henry (who obviously isn't a winger) in that respect, or maybe David Ginola.

But, outside of Italy '90, he got them in minor/qualifier games... I notice that the only major tournament he played in, he was awesome!  Cool

Well.

Still, Waddle did not have that stupid attitude that Wilkinson has before he kicks.  Silly Seriously, mate, he looks ridiculous with this preparation position... Ok, Gavin Henson's even worse in that respect, but I don't see the point... Grant Fox never needed to do a kata before kicking penalties...  bigthumbsup

Why u don't just say that he pulled out a gun and tried to shoot Trézéguet ?
Cmon, that was just a somewhat dangerous tackle (which cost him a yellow card -> missing the game vs. Swiss), unlike what Trézéguet did, which was not only dangerous but a violent and non-sportive offence. He deserved that red card.

He gets 5 tackles like the mentioned one in every Juventus game,so WTF?

So long as he puts 24 points past the French in World Cup semi-finals he can stand on his head beforehand as far as I'm concerned!  Wink

Apparently it's just part of a set routine that he developed with Dave Alred to make sure, by making big movements, that he repeats the technique exactly.

But, yes, he does look stupid. Big grin

No right of saying then. Try actually watching games. Such tackles are a common thing , and normally they grant the performer a yellow card. Performing a "lobotomy" is, however, scandalous, thus the red card.

No complaints, mate! If Lewis Moody is stupid enough to keep coming in from the side at the ruck when you can hear the referee telling him not to, then we deserve to give away penalties. And with Yashvili, he's going to kick them. God knows England have punished enough sides the same way with Wilkinson.

As for your game against Wales, it was easily the game of the tournament. And you got walloped in the second half. Whatever you think about how good the Welsh really are, my God they're exciting when they're in full flow. I was cheering them on too, not something that happens often. About as rare as the time I was out of my seat cheering France on - but of course, that World Cup semi was something truly, truly special, and you know the one I mean!  Wink

Ah, memories... I still think the Welsh took advantage of 20 terrible minutes by France. The other 60 minutes were an utter domination by les Bleus. Only the scoreboard means something, though. Hey, we exacted revenge on the Macs, anyway. Didn't you love that Baby run? And that cute headbutt on BOD?  Wink

Us rugby fans need to stick together! Big grin

That headbutt was a little naughty. Obvious too. Even watching it live on the television it was case of "Did you see that? He's just headbutted him!" Big grin

I always thought Brian Moore had it right. Keep winding up the French forwards until at least one of them (usually two) punched him, go down with an air of injured innocence, and then take the 13 remaining Frenchmen to the cleaners. Big grin Ah, happy days...  Wink

Except this time it was a three quarter... The next Eric Bonneval. Although there's a bit of Jeremy Guscott (classy, mate, classy) in him... The way he finds the holes... The step and ball-carrying of Bonneval and the eye and agility of Guscott... Watch out!

But yes, Anglo-Saxon teams have always known how to make the French blow a fuse... See France vs England 1992... Jokes aside, I seriously think Laporte has instilled some much-needed discipline in the players. Just like Sir Woodward taught you a (very little) bit of French flair!
