I meant to post this yesterday.

Howell Heflin was probably the best politician sent to Washington from the state of Alabama. Although he was a conservative Democrat, he rejected the racial demagoguery of divisive racial politics that still seems to be prevalent in the Deep South today. Howell Heflin is definitely a product of a time when the South was trying to move forward and become a more modern and civilized society. Unfortunately that momentum has been lost.

Unfortunately, many who know no more about Heflin than his folksiness and his infamously phrased, but to the point, "Are you a scorned woman?" question to Anita Hill, do not realize that he had a thorough knowledge of the law. He was truly a gentleman politician, who tried to work with others on both sides to build consensus and compromise. Jeff Sessions, the right-wing puppet who took Heflin's place in the senate, is an utterly unworthy successor.

Superfly, I think you are projecting too much of what is happening in current day politics onto the old stereotypes about the south. The regression of which you speak is widespread, and as entrenched in the midwest and noncoastal western U.S. as it is anywhere in the south. After all, the south didn't give W another term single handedly.
I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.

Very true.
However it's much worse in the South.
