The Pope Is Dead "not just yet"

Sat Apr 02, 2005 3:20 am

German TV just said that the bronze doors have been closed, the sign that the pope has passed away. May he rest in peace.

Can you provide a link, even if it is in German? ARD says his condition is still grave.

Nothing here in the US, but even if the news isn't true it's only a matter of time...

News agencies in the US tend to hold off until news is definite after some bad experiences in the past...

Watching CNN live from The Vatican, and there is no report of his death, only that his "body is giving out on him".

Just found the link:

http://www.heute.de/ZDFheute/inhalt/9/0,3672,2282665,00.html

Quick translation is that Italian Television has reported the right hand bronze door to St. Peters has closed, indicating the death of a pope.

It's on www.spiegel.de , only in German: http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/0,1518,349205,00.html

As Racko said, the article mentions they closed the bronze doors to St. Peter's, traditionally a sign for the Pope's death. If it is what it seems to be, may he rest in peace.

The BBC also still say that his condsition has worsened. More to the point, BBC radio (I always have it on in the background) are yet to say anything.

It may be that the news sources are waiting for any official confirmation. The last thing they want to do is jump the gun on this.

It's possible he is in what doctors call the active phase of dying. A process where the major organs begin to shut down and blood pressure drops. It can last for hours or severa days.

RIP

Watching CNN live from the Vatican. The Pope's condition has worsened within the past hours; his kidney functions have pretty much failed and his cardio-respirtory functions have gotten bad. May he rest in peace.

Aloges,

ZDF reports:

Das gilt in Rom als Hinweis auf einen Papsttod.

Can you help with a more accurate translation?

Thanks,

Well, technically they didn't say "He's dead." but reported that the doors have been closed - somewhat confusing if you don't know exactly what that can mean.

Edit:

Quoting ZDF:
Das gilt in Rom als Hinweis auf einen Papsttod.

In Rome, this is considered an indication of the death of a Pope.

They're definitely watching what they're saying, same for SPIEGEL Online.

Maybe I was a bit trigger-happy, as the tv stations have rowed back now, but the expert on TV said that the door is closed when the pope has died, as a sign that praying for his life has no use anymore.

Perhaps - not that I blame you, since it obviously APPEARED that way, and people generally like to be the first to post big news here - but regardless, it's evident the Holy Father will not be with us for long.

May God bless him and his successor when the time comes, whoever that may be.

He jumped the gun so the title should be changed but he shouldn't be ashamed of himself. It was a mistake.

Although saying that, we could always just keep it as the title will sadly be true soon enough.

Well, which is it? It's almost 1330 EST and Reuters, Foxnews.com and CNN mention he's "deteriorated further" . . . "breathing shallow" . . . "clinging to life". The TV in the background in SOC here is on NBC, and surely they'd break to cover it. Kinda like the title of this thread, I think some news sources are jumping the gun to "report it 1st". Sick.
