Insurgents Attack Abu Ghraib, 18 US Casualties

Sun Apr 03, 2005 2:06 pm

"A group of 40 to 60 insurgents attacked the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq late Saturday in a well-coordinated assault that inflicted 18 American casualties, U.S. military officials told NBC News. "

"insurgents attacked with two car or truck bombs, 40 mortars and an intense ground assault.

The attack began as darkness fell on the city, 1st Lt. Adam Rondeau told the Associated Press. Soldiers and Marines stationed at the detention facility responded, and the resulting clash lasted about 40 minutes, Rondeau said.

"This was obviously a very well-organized attack and a very big attack," he said."

No word has been given whether ANY of the insurgents were injured/kill or captured.

I haven't seen any of this on the news.

Do you have a link?

Forty to Sixty insurgents against a fortified facility. And that many US Casualties? Doesn't bode well for our forces. . . what caused the casualties? Lucky shot with a mortar? Certainly not one on one ground fire.

Understatement if they were able to inflict these types of casualties in 40 minutes against a hardened target.

Remember that "casualties" does not always mean "killed". In fact all of the U.S. troops survived and most of the injuries were minor.

Thanks for the link B757300 . . .

I understand what casualties mean . . . believe me . . . I'm still rather surprised at the number given the facility that was attacked. I would hazard a guess that the US forces were in a bit less than on the ball . . . can't do that in a war zone, ever.

That's because you were so busy bitching about the coverage on the Pope.  Big grin

Glad none of our guys were killed, and it shows that the situation in Iraq is far from safe.
