Mon Apr 04, 2005 4:02 pm

In Switzerland, Pizza Hut and wendy's no longer exist. The Swiss division of those fast foods have gone bankrupt. i thus wanted to know if Wendy's and Pizza Hut astill exist in other countries and if yes, are they in big economic diificulty ?

Pizza Hut is well alive and kicking here in Ireland, but no Wendy's (fortunately).

I know why Wendy's went bakrupt in Switzerland

For example in Geneva, there would be two Wendy's 500 m from each other......... and in those 500 m were a Mc donald's and Burger King!!!! Already with one Wendy's they would have never had enough customers, but with two so close it explains the huge loss they must have made !
anyways Witzerland is not too welcoming for Fast foods. Only a few BK in the main cities, and Pizza Hut, Subway and Wendy's have all gone bankrupt !

P:S I don't remeber much Wendy's burgers but as far as I know they were not the best !

There is currently no Wendy's in Germany, as far as I know. I've seen them in Budapest once, but other than that, I'm not sure where in Europe they have them... However, there are two A&Ws in Germany though. Perhaps that will satisfy your hunger for burgers... yummy
Or maybe you want to go to Taco Bell instead  Wink If so, see this thread: Taco Bell In Europe? (by Avianca Apr 4 2005 in Non Aviation)

Anyone know where? It's so hard to find Root Beer in Germany.  Sad

Wal Mart doesn't seem to be doing very good over there as well. Maybe because in Germany they focus more on groceries then other stuff, the complete opposite as Canada.

Actually Walmart is the number 2 retailer in the UK (with its ASDA brand). It's still a way off the number one Tesco, but it's overtaken the likes of Sainsbury's

Bankrupt is not the proper word for going out of business. I imagine that none of the chains that have removed their divisions out of certain countries did so because those restaurant chains went bankrupt. They probably merely closed down because of lack of business. That's most likely the result of being American-style eateries in Europe, which has different attitudes towards fast food.

Rest assured, all of those chains are doing quite well in their home market, America. Especially Wendys and Subway.

One is near Hannover, the other is in Berlin. It's a joint KFC and A&W place.
Check here (ZIP code 13405 and 30827):

To answer the original question of the thread... Pizza Hut is doing so so in Germany. There are very few around, they are thus hard to find and they are unbelievably expensive...
They also have a few small express places where they only sell slices.
A whole Pan Pizza in the restaurant is the range from 10 to 15 Euros, that is much more than you would pay at any decent Italian restaurant, where you'd expect to pay 6 to 10 Euros. I guess that's why it's not too popular over here. If they lowered their prices a bit, I'm sure they'd be more successful.
I'd be interested to know how much they charge in other countries.
As I said before, there is unfortunately no Wendy's in Germany.

Pizza Hut are part of the Whitbread group, who own Marriott Hotels, Travel Inn and others over here in the U.K. They are, as many people have said, doing fine over here in the U.K.

Strictly speaking, Whitbread are only involved in Pizza Hut in the UK. It is a joint venture between Pizza Hut and Yum. Globally, Pizza Hut belongs to YUm, the largest restaurant company in the world.

But they're also just about twice the size. If you go into a local pizzeria and buy a "large" pizza for 5-10 euros, its only enough for one person. Where a medium pizza for 15-20 euros from Pizza Hut is good for 2 people. Most the people I know haven't even heard of Pizza Hut or KFC, all they know is McDonalds. KFC has been in Germany for 30 years and I just found out about it 3 years ago. So I think it might be a lack of marketing. Besides lots of Germans don't like to try new things, they like to stick to their "Currywurst, pommes, mayo"....Yum, yum!

Pizza Hut is still alive in Malaysia. Here, Pizza Hut is owned by KFC Malaysia Ltd, so it's not uncommon to have KFC & Pizza Hut side by side.

Haven't seen Wendy's for ages around here. I think the last time I had one was probably 15 years ago. We still have plenty of A&W outlets though.

Wow, then you did a good job there... When I went to Berlin lately I did not miss out on going to A&W and it was pretty good. You should have introduced more of them... Berlin is damn far away! Are they planning to get more of them over here? We really need more selection... McD, BK and a few KFCs and Pizza Huts are all we get here. Subway is growing though...
If you worked for Yum, then you should have also encouraged them to introduce Taco Bell in Europe, I'm sure it would go well. The TexMex foods are on the rise and have been since a few years. People here seem to like it a lot.

For me it is strange that Pizza Hut watched Pizza Hut Switzerland go bancrupt. I bet it is not good for their image.

Probably Switzerland is not a good place for Pizza Hut because there are so many good Pizza restaurants (with real Italian Pizza) around. Here in BSL you get a great Pizza once you are a bit outside of downtown (especially in the quarters where a lot of Italians live) for a low price (CHF15-25). Who needs an overpriced low quality pizza @Pizza Hut then?

I think however that fast food in Switzerland can be succesful. McDonalds is a good example here and Burger King is opening a branch here too in autumn.

Regards,
RJ100

Many USA based fast food and related chain places to eat are actually not operated by the parent companies even in the USA, but rather are franchises. By Franchising, a popular form of business in the USA, you operate an individual store or a number of stores in a particlular location or area, a state or even a small country. One agrees in a contract to operate the store(s) under the tradename, adheare to company standards and menus, purchase all or almost all of your supply products from the parent company, pay a percentage of gross business, often requiring a minimum amount per month/year as specified in a contract.
As noted above, one of the Yum! company chains brands are actually operated in a joint venture in the UK with a major brewing/pub operator company. Wendy's did operate (directly or via franchisors) a number of locations in Europe, but they were later shut down. Reasons for failure can include: fashions in food change, poor revenue, excessive supplies costs as not enough units to support a supplying base facility, problems with local governments, franchise disputes with parent companies, econimic problems, anti-American bias, development of competitors and so on.

I'm still pissed at Wendy's for getting rid of their Sister's Chicken chain a few years back. Best fast-food chicken I ever had. Miss them dearly.  Sad

Still like A Wendy's Single with cheese, mustard, ketchup and onion, and love when they come out with their bacon mushroom Melts. Yummy.

They're alive and well in the states, that's for sure, although I eat less and less traditional "fast-food". I've been eating Subway when I get the hankering for "fast food".

In Canada, Wendy's is doing quite well, having recently purchased our precious Tim Horton's, and now expanding quite a bit in many parts of the country. I believe there are dozens of joint Tim Horton's/Wendy's establishments, and you may soon see some in the US, as well, as the Tim Horton's brand is slowly brought out there.

Pizza Hut (as well as KFC and Taco Bell) are owned by Pepsi - or at least their north american arms are, and so I'm sure the companies themselves will not be going bankrupt any time soon!
Next flight.... who knows.

Actually, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and KFC are NOT any longer owned by Pepsi. They were spun off into an independent company, Yum! Restaurants in 1997. They are the largest restaurant company in the world.

Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC, Long John Silvers, and A&W are all under the Yum! brand. There is an A&W/LJS combo up the street from my apartment and they are trying to build a Taco Bell/LJS in Vancouver Washington. There is stll a tie-in with Pepsi somehow.

I hope they have the good sense to keep the same products. I got to eat at Tim's for the first time last summer and I *loved* it! I hope it expands to the U.S. soon!

There is no tie in with Pepsi whatsoever. Whilst Pepsi is their preferred soft drink supplier under the current contract, there is no other tie in. They have some debt to pay back to Pepsi, though.
