Does Anyone Know The Name Of This Movie?

Tue Apr 05, 2005 3:05 am

While contemplating buying the 40th Anniversary DVD of Dr Strangelove I thought back to a movie about a nuclear strike I saw on TV in the late 70s but I can't remember the name.

Basically it went something like :

Bomber crew (most likely B-52) gets message to attack Soviet Union either deliberately or by mistake.
Bomber doesn't get or doesn't take notice of recall.
Penetrates defences (takes most of movie from memory) and ends up nuking Moscow I think.
In order to avert all out war US President agrees with Soviet Leader to nuke own US city (which I think is New York and not Washington) as "compensation" / "even the ledger".
Movie ends with another Bomber about to drop bomb on selected US city.

Anyone know the name of this movie?

Thanks in advance.

TSV...

The movie is "Fail Safe". Actually done in 1963 or 1964, I believe.

Henry Fonda plays the President, and Larry Hagman is the interpreter.

Great movie...and at the time VERY chilling.

You are correct in the story line. A bomber crew receives the "Go" order due to a computer error, wipes out Moscow and the President has a US bomber destroy New York City to avert war.

Edit to add: The US bombers were B-58 Huslers.

Regards,

Mike
