Because of the proximity of all the oil refineries here. Fly into EWR and that is all you see.

I paid $2.039/gallon yesterday here in Dallas (regular unleaded).

Still a real bargain. Adjusted for inflation, gas was the equivalent of about $3.00/gallon in 1982 (and that was with gas taxes a good $0.20/gallon lower than now).

Prices in the USA vary considerably due to proximity of refineries, variation by state and some local governments in per gallon taxes, the addition of sales taxes by some state and local governments, and local fuel mixes.
The highest prices are in Southern Califronia, where local lower pollution fuel mixes are used, fairaly high state taxes and with prices for self-serve Regular Unleaded in the $2.70-$3.00 range.
NJ has close by refineries and low state per gallon fuel taxes (among the lowest in the USA) so has among the lowest prices right now in the USA with a range of $1.98 to $2.10/gallon for Regular Unleaded (may be some local, individual stations with slightly lower or higher prices).
I expect prices to get to about $2.15 - 2.35/gallon range in NJ and national averages of around $2.45 - 2.60/US Gallon by June.

Here in Auckland NZ it is around the NZD$1.22 per litre. That's around 40p in pounds. In US talk it's NZD$4.61 per gallon or USD3.22 per gallon. I think you guys in the US should shush up about the price of fuel when it costs us more here, and we have it cheap in comparison to Europe....

Quoting N766UA (Reply 20):

Oh dear, I thought NZ was backward with fuel octane levels....we have 91,96,98 depending on the petrol company.

Down the street, 1.89 a gallon for regular. Full service, as is all NJ.

I don't see refineries being the cause of lower prices, most likely lower state gas taxes.

Is European high octane fuel leaded?

I imagine fuel prices in Europe are rising commensurate to the US. Unless a price ceiling exists and in that case less money per liter will be absorbed by taxes.

France tried such an occurrence called the "folating tax" T.I.P.P. flottante; in short the tax would be lower when oil prices are high and higher when oil prices drop.

Except the former never happened, French population went "Rhaa !" and the whole thing got scrapped.
