Red Sox Avoid Winless Season

Thu Apr 07, 2005 5:34 am

I have to admit, there are some real crazy types here in Boston. After dropping the first two games of the season to the Yankees, there were some fans lining up to jump of the Tobin Bridge. crazy

The Sox beat the Yanks today, 7-3, after Mariano Rivera blew another save opportunity in the top of the 9th with the Yanks up 3-2. Thanks are also due to A-rod, who committed a crucial error in the 9th.

That was seriously not cool.

Despite Rivera's inability to have a clean game against the Red Sox, I have to keep reminding myself that had A-Rod been able to field that ball cleanly, it turns into a 5-4-3 double play, Yankees win, and this discussion never happens. Errors happen sometimes. This one came in a really bad spot, but it is just a regular season game, and the Yankees still took the series.

With that said, Rivera blowing two saves (this one wasn't entirely his fault) against the Sox is troubling. Part of it has to be attributed to the fact that they see him so much, but that's still no reason for this. I don't know what else to say about it, except that we'll just have to wait and see what the next games against Boston have to hold.

Depends on your perspective. Wink Long way to go, let's just ride it out.

Oh I completely agree, but this last game was still not cool at all.

I don't blame A-Rod for anything.

I blame it more on Torre (and Rivera) than anyone else. There is absolutely no way that it should've gotten to that crucial point where an error could cost the game. I'm not even sure it was even prudent for Joe Torre to put Rivera in for the 9th. Considering he had blown his last three save opportunities against Boston, I would have much rather taken my chances with Karsay or Felix Hernandez. I even would've rather seen Sturtze left in the game for the ninth, as he was doing a decent job in relief and didn't seem to be getting too tired. This is what happens when I skip class to watch the Yankee game.  Sad

Only 43 more wins, and the Sox won't have to worry about having the fewest wins/most losses in a 162-game season. I'm sure the 2003 Tigers are keeping a close eye on the Sox to see if they might break their record duck .

Also, Mariano hasn't thrown all spring. He's rested as hell, but apparently he has a bit of rust to shake off. Check him again in two weeks.

Was it just a little rust in July when he blew the brawl game? or in October when he blew 2 straight saves in the ALCS? and now in April when he blew 2 more?

The Sox have that guy completely figured out, unfortunately no one else in baseball does...

Rivera will be back against the sox soon, and he'll get his share of saves in the sox's delipidated Boston hovel. In fact, come October, KROC will be posting images of J.V. whiffing a Rivera cutter every time a chowd honk attempts a lame, gloating crackback.  Smile

Whats new, the Sox and Yanks are playing again next week. They play so damn much that its not even special when they meet up anymore.

Ruining the rivalry I think.
