How Many Eagle Scouts Out There?

Fri Apr 08, 2005 11:10 am

I remember that we had a thread a while back where a bunch of users posted saying they are Eagle Scouts, and I am asking now how many of you also achieved this rank? The reason for asking is that I passed my Eagle Board of Review tonight, and am wondering how many fellow Eagles are roaming the boards.

Congats on your achievment. I was an almost one. When I was a Scout in the late 60's early 70's, I just couldn't qualify for the (water) Lifesaving Merit Badge, which was one of the Merit Badges required to become an Eagle.
My father was honored as an Adult Leader with what I recall was called the 'Silver Beaver'(?) Me, both of my brothers and my father were all active in Scouts for years and my brother was an Eagle Scout, so I know what it represents. Me and my brothers were also receipients of the Catholic scouting medal. For a number of years my father represented his VFW Post at Eagle Scout ceremonies, where new Eagle Scouts usually got a honorium for their patrotism and citizenship.

Congrats! It's definitely something to be proud of... and an awesome thing to put on any resume.

Hopefully you did not wait as long as I did - my board of review was 2 weeks before my 19th birthday.

But congrats again!

Invasive species removal (pretty much large scale weeding  Smile) near the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, and then replanting. I'm really glad to get this done, since I turned 18 last December, and of course waited until the last minute to get all my stuff done. Big grin

Congratulations. Getting that board of review done with feels great!

I earned the rank in 2002. I would do the whole thing over again if I had the chance; it was a great experience. Scouting was a more worthwhile experience than high school was.

Yet another A.net Eagle Scout. Earned it back in 1993. I had my Eagle Board about 2 months before my 18th Birthday. It was close to three years between earning my Life Scout rank and earning my Eagle. At times, I wished I hadn't waited so late to get it, as I wish I would have been able to get a Palm or two. I was one of four Eagle Scouts in my high school graduating class.

Is the rumor about KROC getting thrown out of Scouts for eating a Brownie true......

I am, Eagle Scout in 2000... though in hindsight I'm split on my opinion of the organization. I was an SPL twice, did high-adventure in Northern Teir twice, and am very much the better for the experiences.

Here's my group doing one of those things that you know is wrong, life threatening, but fun, so you do it anyway. That's what I remember most about the organization. We actually were camping in those tents below, and the guy on the far left said something to the effect of: "Hey wouldn't it be fun it we ____ " Second on the right would be yours truely when I was 15 or 16.

My only objection with BSA is their archaic homophobia. I was just leaving BSA when that really flamed up (no pun intended), and being young at the time I was like, no everyone's just exaggerating. But in hindsight, the sheer closemindedness and exclusive, pompus attitude disappoints me to no end... when I was a Scout it was a youth organization not a country club.

I went to Philmont in '71. We were on the trail when a scout died near the Tooth of Time. It was initially thought that the kid died from the bubonic plague, and until it was determined otherwise, no one could leave the ranch. It made the national news, and our parents were quite frightened. We knew absolutely nothing about it until we returned to Tent City, and by that time it was old news.

I made Eagle at age 14. I was a gung-ho scout until I developed the nerve to ask girls out.

At which time you became an Explorer!

My Philmont trip did take us into the northern area, outside of the Philmont boundaries. Hiked up Baldy Mountain, elevation 12,441'. 628H4, which was June into July of 1999.

Another Eagle Scout is my Great Uncle The Famous Astronaut, Neil Armstrong!

I made it as far as 6th grade boy scouts, then quit. I know a few around here who have made it!

I never made it out to Philmont. Our Venture Crew talked about it for a few years (I was ASM for the Venture Crew part of that time), that was about it. Sea Base was where most of the guys wanted to go; myself, I wanted to go to Northern Tier. The biggest trip I ever did while involved in Scouts was to the 1993 National Jamboree (3rd Assistant Scoutmaster, Troop 1844, N.E. GA Council).

Congratulations! While some people don't respect the work it takes to earn that rank in scouts, I've found it to be very well respected in the working world. I received my Eagle in the late 80's, went to Philmont twice, Northern Tier 3 times as a scout and worked as a canoe guide in Bissett (Northern Tier) one summer after I graduated College in the late 90's.

I can honestly say I likely got my first job because of the respect my employer at the time had for the work it took to receive that rank. I agree with the guy who had a split opinion of the organization. On one hand the best friends I'll ever have came from years of camping, hiking and canoeing with people my own age. Also, I learned a lot about leadership, but when I worked for the Scouts in Canada, I always had the opinion they treated the scouts as kids and not young adults.
