How Many Of You Are Watching The Pope's Funeral?

Fri Apr 08, 2005 7:18 pm

Just to know how many of us are paying the last respect to our late holy father.

My gf and I are currently watching it live on TV, but I have to admit we are not entirely respectful (I was not used to eating Kinder Eggs during a Mass !!!)

Cheers,

I'm watching it, if only to admire the St Pietro Cathedral and Piazza. I was only there not so long ago, and I was just thanking my lucky stars I'm not there now with all the crowds. A pretty long and drawn out funeral to be honest, but it's nice to catch up with how all the world leaders are doing, and what they look like, and their reactions. It's been a while since I met the King & Queen of Spain.
Interestingly it looks like Clinton wins the award for being the most genuinely moved and mot deeply in prayer...

I'm neither Catholic nor religious but I watched it. Despite the fact that I disagree with nearly all ethical and moral stances of the CC on birth control, abortion, evolution, etc. I still believe Karol Woltyla was a truly remarkable person. I guess the attendance of 200+ statesmen from all around the world to his funeral proves it.

That only shows that's it's a event where you need to be seen if you want to enhance your PR/political stature.

Just got done watching the live webcast of it, courtesy AP and Yahoo. Catholic services are generally long as a rule and the interruptions only made it run longer. Still, worthwhile to pause in the memory of one who made quite a mark on the papacy and the world for that matter. His successor will have some big decisions to make and mighty big shoes to fill.

The Pope is not worshipped by anyone, including the most devout Catholics. He is not God. He is respected as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, and the holder of the keys of St. Peter, nothing more or less. He is not worshipped.

Catholics don't "worship" the Pope, we worship God. The Pope is a man who is head of our Church so we give him due respect, but we do not idolize him.

Come on man... you watched a 3 hour tribute to a corpse just to look at the Roman architecture, you could have just as easily loaned a book from your local library for that.  wink

At last! Somebody who actually sees how much of a joke this whole fiasco actually is!

I'm not religious in the slightest, but I have to say that it's nice to see to Pope's (real) followers acknowledging what he did for them and their beliefs.

I just think it's a complete shame that an event like this has, once again, been spoiled by politics. The majority of the political leaders that turned up today weren't there because they wanted to be - they were there to make sure that their standing in the political world wasn't affected. They should be shot for being so fake.

I had the misfortune of switching over to BBC1 when the Archbishop of Birmingham was talking absolute crap. He said 'When you leave God out of human affairs, things go wrong'. This nearly made fall out of my chair, I suggest the Archbishop picks up a history book and find out what acts have been committed when God has been brought into human affairs, this kind of hypocrisy drives me insane.

Ditto. He's irrelevant to me. Just a silly old virgin in drag.

My thoughts today are not on the pope, they are on the thousands of boys who were raped by priests under this pope's guard.

The media are making a spectacle of themselves, and turning this into a ratings game.

If Brittany Spears zit burst in the next 10 minutes, killing 2 innocent bystanders, they'd drop the poor deceased Pope, and shine their cameras on her instead.

I watched much of it. Decent funeral. At least a bit more classic than the last one I saw on the telly. Yasser Arafat's...

No matter how much you try to dismiss it or cover it up, the rapes happened. Those boys are still hurting emotionally, and maybe even physically. Some will be scarred for life. Too bad this pope didn't do more to root out the rapists and those that covered it up.

That's a very cold and cavalier attitude to take towards pre-pubescent rape victims, perhaps the most vulnerable of all. Either you will condone any catholic criminality in the name of blind devotion to the church, or you choose not to give thousands of rape victims the benefit of the doubt.

I never ever try to hide the sun with one finger. But try to generalize the problem to the entire Church is not fair. John Paul the II was very clear in this regard and about his policy of "zero tolerance".

It is very arrogant from some people in here, referring the problem only to the Roman Catholic Church, but conveniently not saying a simple single word about thousand of other cases perpetrated by child abusers not related (directly or indirectly) to the CC.

I also was trying to improve my Italian, and picking out what I could understand in the other languages. To me that kind of thing and watching all the people there was pretty interesting.
