Funny College/University/School Nicknames

Sat Apr 09, 2005 1:58 am

The funny airline nicknames in the Aviation Polls and Preferences forum inspired me to create this thread.

What funny nicknames does your college/university/institute have or ones you've heard of from schools you didn't attend?

For starters, here's my list:

University of Massachusetts (UMASS) - ZooMass

Johnson & Wales University - Johnson and Jails University

University of Rhode Island (URI) - U R High

Penn State - State Penn (as in penitentiary)

Roger Williams University (my alma-matter) - Roger Dodger Day Care Center

Valley Forge Christian College - Valley Forge Bridal College
motto: Ring By Spring or your Money Back

Christ For the Nations Institute - Brides Of the Nations
same motto as for VFCC: Ring By Spring or your Money Back

New England Tech - Desperate Tech

Feel free to list any others you may have.  Big grin

I always chuckled over Stevens Hoboken Institute of Technology (make into an acronym).

My alma mater (undergrad) is Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), which is referred to as either Worsted Poly Insta-suit or Whoopie Tech.

Well in Georgia they call the annual game between Georgia Tech and UGA "Culture vs. Agriculture"

And there's an old chant at Columbia that goes:
"Harvard is run by millionaires
Yale is run by Booze
Cornell is attended by farmer's sons
and Columbia is ruled by Jews"

I guess that goes under school stereotypes though....

We at Columbia refer to our all girl's school Barnard as "The Barnyard (where there's always a cow waiting to be milked)"

That's utterly ridiculous. Wink

That reminds me,when at WPI in the early 1980s, there weren't that many women enrolled at the time, but the was a mostly girls school just down the road: Becker Junior College. We referred to them as the "Becker Pecker Wreckers."

There is a lot between the UCLA vs. USC rivalry:

for UCLA:
Westwood High
University of Caucasians Lost among Asians

for USC:
University of Spoiled Children (the classic)
University of South Central
Figueroa Community College (USC is on Figueroa Ave. in downtown)

otherwise, University of South Carolina Gamecocks make me chuckle.

Our local community college where I attended while in high school had a few:

Lorain County Community College (LCCC)

-AKA Last Chance Community College (LCCC)
-AKA Abbe Road High (It's on Abbe Road)...because most who attend are in hig school.

Good one 'Fly. Incidentally, they did rename their institution to Arcadia University a while back; partly because their previous name kept getting getting blocked out by internet filters.

I agree, USC is the University for Spoiled Children.
I know of a few students from my high school that got in to USC with D & C grade point averages. Having a rich daddy pays off, I guess.

BEAT USC!

The local community college by my house, Moraine Valley, is often called Moron Valley, or UCLA (University of Chicago LaGrage Avenue) because of the street it is located on.
The school I go to, Illinois State University (ISU) is sometimes called "I Screwed Up" by high schoolers because people joke that it is often a backup school for those who couldn't get into Northwestern and the University of Illinois etc.
I agree with Mdsh00 about the University of South Carolina...a guy on my floor always wears a hat that says "COCKS" and written in small print underneath is "University of South Carolina"

Dang. I thought I would get a chance to talk about my high school and my dad's high school nicknames:

Me: Pendleton Oregon Bucks (Short for Buckaroos)
Dad: Arlington Oregon Honkers

We both graduated from Blue Mountain Community College. Those that could not afford to attend a real college like Oregon State or Portland State went to BMCC. Or, as we called it: Harvard on the Hill.

Glad to see my alma mater (the REAL USC, I might add, an abbreviation that the University of Spoiled Children has hijacked. Besides...everybody knows you don't need Trojans unless you've got Cocks) is the source of much amusement to you lunks  Wink

University of Wisconsin at River Falls is called "Moo U" because it has various Dairy Science majors.

It's kind of cool to think about. A farmer with a bachelors degree.

Well, at UND we say that University of North Dakota is for culture, and North Dakota State is for agriculture. However, it's really true, NDSU's agriculture program is one of the biggest source of majors in their university, and UND doesn't have an agriculture program.

My previous university, University of Texas at Arlington was called University of Texas Almost. The reference was directed toward University of Texas at Austin. University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) was called "La Universidad." Steven F. Austin had a number of derogatory references referring to their constant state of drunkeness. There are too many A&M and UT references to even list. El Centro Community College in Dallas is called "El Dropout."

Washington State University - WSU - is known as "WAZOO". Although I believe that the university was actually trying to eliminate the use of that name.

Good luck with that!!! "WAZOO" has been used for so long that it's almost part of the culture

College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA is known as William & Larry due to the higher than average gay population.
