What Did You Do For 2000 New Years Eve?

Sun Apr 10, 2005 1:46 am

Its incredible how time flies....year 2000 is 5 years behind. I remeber back in 1995 when I thought 5 years was an awful long time to wait before Y2k

I thought it would be nice to share our experience of that event.

I was in the middle of Geneva where a huge public party was organised. There were around 300 000 people .I remeber the giant sandclock being turned around during the countdown. With my friends,we then went to different parts of the city where all sorts of activities and concerts were taking place. I had lots of fun and I'll remember that night for a very long time !!!

I was at home with family, watching the ball drop on TV. It's not like I missed a bunch of parties, though, since I was only 13 at the time.  Smile

I was in my bomb shelter, with 5 years worth of preserved food waiting for the world to end.  Wink

Seriously though, I was at home with some friends, that's about it. The funny thing about the year 2000 was during the first week of January, were the line ups outside the hardware stores, because everyone was trying to return the generators and emergency equipment they bought and get their money back. Me and some friends went around and laughed at them all! Big grin

cheers,

Nothing - I went home and slept. New Years is for the amateurs. I party every other night of the year.

A buddy and I were in Spain from 25th December 1999 till 3rd January 2000 (a small town near Alicante) because we could use his parent's house there.

On New Years Eve we had a very nice dinner in a Spanish restaurant, later we went to a bar owned by a Dutch guy. I don't remember much from that night because I drunk way too much Heineken and smoked way too much weed Big grin.

I was alone at my house, lol. My parents were out at a NYE party. It was enjoyable, though.

I stood on Red Square in Moscow to be pushed by a bunch of people and then having chapagne popped in my face. Then walking as part of a large crowd down Ohotniy Ryad towards our apartment.
What now?

The one thing I wanted to do when I lived in Spain, was to be on Levante Beach in Benidorm at the massive party and fireworks display, but I'd been in resort since April, and the bastards at JMC decided to send me home on the 30th December, so I ended up staying at home with no plans all by myself, with my brother and his ex snogging right in front of me. I was not a happy bunny, but nevermind, I got over it (with a bottle of vodka, lol)

The flight attendant on an empty, save for a FAA inspector, regional on our way back from some god forsaken place in upstate NY...... that's when the ball dropped in NY...... the real drop at UTC was a full flight of gamblers, thanking their lucky stars they weren't in the air at midnight..... funny, they didn't realize that 'Aviation 2000' had begun 5 hours earlier. New Year's to me is so relative.

We were both lonely people far away from home on a beautiful island in a beautiful country on a beautiful night. Probably one of the best nights of my life. The next few months weren't too bad either  Wink .I really didn't want to come home.
The Maldives were magical.

I was the riding battalion chief for the fire department that night. Made one run the whole night. Some fool was running a gasoline powered circular saw in his basement a little after midnight. Overcome by the fumes.

Hey Sabena,

Where were you. we used to have an apartment in Calpe and loved it down there. We would go 4-5 times/year when we were living in the UK, but sold the place when we moved back to the US.

As for my Y2k New Years, I got to work. I was working IT for a major Health Insurance company at the time, so we had to sit and make sure the systems didn't go nuts at Midnight. Of course nothing happened and the night was a waste for us.

I think we played cards all night. But to be safe (I didn't know better), I bought a big kerosene heater - I was listening to Y2K hype, so I got a heater that could be returned w/o a problem were the whole thing a hoax (as it was). Big grin

We were in Altea. I remember Calpe, we were there on New Years day to eat Spanish ham, the president of the local carnival club invited us when we met him a few days earlier in some bar (unfortunately I can not remember his name, he was a black guy from some Caribbean island but his German was excellent).

I really like this area of Spain and enjoyed the time there very much. We also had incredible luck with the weather, perfect to make daytrips with our rental car.

Sabena332,

I love Altea, its so picturesque. I used to visit the market every Tuesday, then onto a Bodega, a typical British excursion, but I loved being in Altea. If I moved back, I would live there.

You too? Did you bring adequate stocks of ammo for the armory, seed for the crops, and chlorine to purify the contaminated water? If not we had you beat.  Wink

I lived in Seattle at the time. Some people with connections to terrorist groups tried to smuggle bombs across the ferry from Victoria BC so almost all the celebrations were cancelled and most people stayed in. I and my ex and about 25 000 hearty souls stood on Queen Anne Hill and watched as the Golden Elevator made it's climb up the Space Needle to Midnight! I have been going to their NYE celebrations ever since!

BTW, anyone know if there are still copies of the different celebrations still being sold? I meant to buy one back then, but never got around to it. I wanted to see Paris' celebration.

Hi,

Thanks to my unstable ex-girlfriend and her healthy fear of the millennium bug, my new years eve was spent in my locked student room, surrounded by bottled water, cans of beans and candles. All of my friends were out partying and I was locked up like a criminal with an insane fellow inmate.

I didn't even get any action for here either. In conclusion, the night sucked. the world didn't end, I almsot wish it had...

I was at Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida, courtesy of tickets given to my family by my aunt.

I half-bought into the Y2K thing. At the time I was suffering from an untreated anxiety disorder, and the thought that things could get even more out of control was very disturbing. But the fact that I was in Florida, not at home, is an indication that I was willing to gamble on flights being available the next day.

I stood with my parents as the countdown took place, and when the lights didn't go out, I figured everything was pretty much okay. A man next to us proposed to his girlfriend (she said "yes") and most everyone was partying and hugging.
