Where Do Foreign Leaders Stay While In DC?

Tue Apr 12, 2005 2:30 am

Anybody have any ideas where foreign leaders stay when they are in Washington DC for meetings? For example, Sharon is going to be in town for the next two nights. Does he stay at the Embassy or at a hotel or what? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Usually at their embassies. Sometimes, of course, the President will invite them to either stay at the Whitehouse, or have the meeting at Camp David.

Embassies often serve as accommodation for foreign leaders even in their own country. For example, the Queen has stayed at the US Embassy in London, which might seem at first sight a bit peculiar when she has a place up the road. As an aside, Raymond Seitz, the former US Ambassador to the UK, tells a delightful story of his mortification when his dog bounded into the Queen's bedroom and leapt on the bed. Big grin

I saw a very interesting report about the White House a few weeks ago. They mentioned that many, many foreign Presidents have already stayed there and that the White House provides everything they need 24 hours a day.

Winston Churchill for example had his favorite butler, nobody else was allowed to serve him food/drinks when he visited Washington except this black guy.

They also had an interview with the butler in the report, he said that Churchill once called him at 2 o'clock in the night to ask for a bottle whiskey Big grin.

A lot of times, they stay at the Blair House which is across the street from the White House.
