Who Else Is Doing Their Taxes Tonight?

Fri Apr 15, 2005 8:41 am

How many out there are figuring your taxes tonight and tomorrow?

Usually ours are done by the 15th of February but this year with the business it has been more complicated and we are just now doing our personal taxes.

Luckily we will be filing electronically and won't have to stand in line at the Post Office.....unless we actually owe money, in which case I will max out my float.

How many of you are doing the same thing?

When and how do you in countries other than the US pay your taxes?

Why does it have to be so complicated?

Thankfully, my company already filed an extension for me!

Mr. Harlot did our taxes on Sunday and we submitted them Monday. Let me just say OUCH!

In Canada you have to file your income taxes by April 30 (has that changed in the last ten years?). I still get confused around the beginning of April which country has which date.
But that was when I ruled the world

I mailed mine this week along with a hefty tax cheque. I had a good stock market year in 2004 which, unfortunately, the crooks and pigs in Ottawa will also benefit from.

This is one time of year that I am glad I don't spend enough time in any single country to be considered a resident for taxation purposes.

Confirms what I already suspected: only 14 people on A.net have an income sufficent enough that their parents aren't present to take care of tax returns

When do you have to send it in by? I remember seeing a sign at a post office in New York (the one opposite Madison Square Gardens) saying something like, "If you post your tax return before midnight, you will receive a postmark for that day". I can't remember it exactly.

Also, what happens if you don't get it done in time?

Someone did tax papers and mailed them yesterday (April 14). Just one day before deadline.

To answer some of British767's questions.
We in the USA require that you file as to Federal (and applicable State)Income Tax(es), a return or an extension to file a return by today, April 15th (or if falls on a Saturday or Sunday, on the following Monday), along with any additional monies due in taxes or an estimate of same (in the case where you file an extension as to taxes due in your income in the previous calendar year. The extension is generally for 4 months (mid-August). Those states that also have a State Income Tax have their own forms to fill out, follow the federal deadlines, and also allow for extensions.
One can electronically file, (fax, internet to IRS and State Tax authorities) as most are doing this year, and that must be done by 11:59 pm. If one uses the mail (post), it must be in the Post Office and postmarked by today's date and before midnight to be considered legally filed. Some regional post offices offer extended hours tonight to permit people to drop off their returns before the due time. Some, as so close to the deadline and to prevent an audit or a penalty for late filing, choose to mail their returns by Certified mail or get a receipt (both with fees) to assure that they did bring the return mailing by the date and time. This means long lines at major post offices and overtime for the postal workers.
The large post office in NY City by Madison Square Garden has been for many years a place for the media to be at as it is open 24/7 anyway. Often anti-tax protestors, commercial tax prep firms, companies offering free giveaways (like heartburn medicines, food and beverage samples) are out in front of this building, making things like a circus.
By the way, I filed my returns back in mid-February, when had all the forms available, and got my Federal overpayment refund by mid-March.  cool

Oh chill out. I pay far more taxes than you and live in a far more equitable society to begin with. Nonetheless, I will still pursue every legal tax deferral method legally allowed.

Thank you for the thorough response LTBEWR!

Do you know what the penalty is for not responding on time?

I saw that sign in the NY post office last week when I was there, and it immediately made me think of The Simpsons! There was an episode where everyone is trying to get their tax returns in.

Thanks again!

I did my taxes back in January after I got my W-2's.

I filed my Federal right away since I was getting a decent refund.

I just dropped mine off at the post office to the State of Arizona, with a check for a whopping $65.

In answer as to you British767, the penalties vary:
A fine of up to $25,000 for not filing a timely return or extension. The higher amounts are usually for tax protestors, those whom intentionally not file a return.
A fine of $500 can be assessed for filing a frivious return, that is one with anti-IRS statements, or deliberate mistatements or saying you are not required to file for some anti-tax reason that may not apply to you.
You also pay an amout of 5% per month on the unpaid and due taxes (if you owe money). You can also pay this penalty if you paid at extention filing an amount less than 90% of the final determined taxes due. If you just cannot pay past due taxes due to employment loss, business income losses, health problems, then one can negotiate with the IRS to pay a part of said due taxes and penalties. In some cases, some pay only tiny percentages of their taxes due.

Not me, if you wanted a tax return quickly, you needed to fill out your forms (or in this case the computer program) before April 1st.

Cheers!
