A-net Nerds

Sun Apr 17, 2005 6:40 am

OK we have had the a-net mafia.....the A-net grumpy old men's and now lets go after nerds....Who Here is the biggest nerds...

So far I have seen people post entire flight tracking screens on here...talk about schedules and now someone noticed an airplane was at the end of the runway in a satellite image. I have even seen people laugh at the star wars nerds...I Wonder if they are talking about the airplane nerds.

So let your inner nerd out and rejoice...be Proud...

Remember Nerds rule the world.

Maybe not necessarily nerds per se, but I've always taken a dim view of these people that go traipsing around the world, spending thousands of dollars on airfare, taxis, hotels, and food and all they do is stand there with a pair of binoculars and a spiral notebook and jot reg #'s down. They don't even have a camera with them. Surely if you can afford to fly from LAX-LHR-HKG and Botswana, surely you can afford $149 for a basic camera.

To me, that always seemed kind of pointless. If I was to go on a trip like that, I'd want to have some kind of visual record of not just the trip for future nostalgia, but pix of the planes as well. Liveries change. Airlines disappear. And so on. I mean anyone can buy a $1.99 spiral notebook and spend an evening jotting numbers down and calling that a "log."

I don't have anything against keeping a log of what planes you see, but geez....take a friggin' camera with you to reflect on or show your friends/kids/family down the road. No one cares about some [to the average Joe] meaningless tail numbers. You never know what you may wish to view or remember 6 months or 20 years down the road.

1. Jen is visiting her friends so she isn't home today. 2. The momma cat is doing just fine, although I made the mistake of leaving some pizza out from last night. I got up this morning and found that she ate it-sauce, cheese, meats and all. What was 4 slices of Red Baron Deluxe last night was four triangles of bare and stale crust this morning. The little kittens are all doing just fine.

Hope this answers your question.  Wink

Great reply, MattD...classic.  Wink

I've always wondered about those members with 10,000+ (especially over 20,000) posts...I mean, don't you have jobs or something else to do? I like the site, but damn...I gotta step away sometimes.

I also wonder about those who post for the hell of it...constantly perpetuating the Gkirk sheep sex jokes...it gets old...REALLY, REALLY old after a very short period of time.

MattD: Some of those who fly around do have airline benefits, so they wouldn't necessarily be spending thousands on airfare. Plus, I think a lot of them (hopefully) post in the trip report forum and do include detailed pictures, assuming they have a quality website to host their pics.

I do have to agree with Matt D on this. What's the point of creating a logbook if you aren't going to take a photo of the aircraft you are logging? One picture is worth a thousand regos in a log book.... Smile

Airplane Nerds are:

People who can look at a contrail and go: Thats an AA 777 going from LHR-JFK. Registration N200AA and it's at FL370.

People who can look up at a plane and say: "You're going to fast! SLOW DOWN! LOWER THE GEAR!"

hehe  Silly

My pet peeve are the dozens of A.nutters who can't seem to contribute anything meaningful to the forums other than: "I can't wait to see XXX aircraft in XX livery". Or the even more pathetic, "Wow, I wish XX would fly the YYYY aircraft to ZZZ city... it would be so cool to see it"

Firstly, why do you have to categorise everyone? Nerds, Geeks, whatever. Sheesh, some people are worse than politicians!

Many people enjoy just logging numbers, it makes them happy and doesn't affect anyone else but themself - apart from some opinionated people on A.net who maybe think they are the be-all and end-all of spotting.

Some people are completely shit at taking pics, some have no storage space and some just plain don't want to.

I suggest if you think this is something wrong or strange then you should examine your own motives first. As far as I knew, most of the people that do this come from a "free" society which allows them to do this. Don't knock it because you don't understand it. There are far too many threads on A.net that criticise without any proper motive or understanding.

As far as I am concerned, if anyone should be classed as something, it's these people who constantly complain and criticise others. I won't say what I think they should be classed as out of respect for the media being used, but I would hope they have enough sense to know what I mean.

So leave basic spotters alone and be grateful you can take good pics, and want to.

I resemble that remark ! I have never jotted down aircraft registrations (except those I fly on, which is legitimate historical research). Frankly the need to write down the rego of every BA A319 one sees bewilders me - but WHYYYY ? I love watching planes, and note with interest in my mind ones I haven't seen before, but why keep track, who cares ?

P.S. I am able to tell what aircraft is what, and make an educated guess as to the flight number, the destination (sometimes its obvious) and (if it's one I know) a stab at at least the first part of the rego. But only for my own amusement. But that doesn't make me a nerd (I don't wear a bobblehat).

Hey, while I always bring a camera to airports, I am sitting here on a Sunday night posting on this thread while wearing my Star Trek t-shirt that has a sillouhette of the USS Enterprise-A with the word GEEK right below it that I got after I spent $75 or so to ride the rides and visit the bridge of the Enterprise D at the Vegas Hiltons Star Trek Experience so I could get a photo of myself in the captains chair.....

does that qualify me as a geek or a nerd....or both?  Wink

Ok My IDEA here (but I have to admit I slightly ripped it off)
There are these guys in Texas who have set up the worlds first internet driven gaming reserve. You log onto your computer, watch the video (you can control the camera/gun), and when bambi comes on the screen: CLICK TO KILL!!!!

My twist: (This would be tough to do, but I think the FAA could be convinced of the evidenciary value of the cameras on field) Have several cameras. Some that have auto tracking, and have the freq of what they cover as audio, Maybe if it gets REALLY fancy; auto loads and displays the flight info of it's subject A/C. Have a few (or more depending on the demmand) that can be cotrolled by remote, with all relevant freq's avail. Have a 'take picture' feature for 'members'  Wink  Wink Then you look at your digital album, and for a nominal fee print/ship your pics.

Well, i guess i'm a nerd then coz i 'jot down numbers' without taking pics! I've been to airshows/airports/viewing parks all over the place and i think i've only ever used one roll of film on aircraft. Why? Simple, i couldn't give a flying fcuk about taking pics of planes....does that make me sad? In some people's eyes yes, in other's not at all. On the subject of logging numbers, i must admit that i can remember where i saw around 75% of them....nerdy? No. good memory? Yep! Ohh btw, i can take good pictures, so don't think i don't snap away coz i'm crap, it's just i have no desire to. What's sad and nerdy to you is just another thing to me, and vice versa! What is sad is when aviation enthusiasts call each other nerds!!!!  Sad

I sit at work every day and surf the site. I finally joined this year. I had taken many many flights and I have never taken a picture of the plane, or wrote down the reg. I have NW DC-9 syndrome. Every flight, my words as I walk up to the gate are, "shit, another one? Will the ever run our of these f**king things?" or do they just look at the manifest and decide that they see my name and then put a DC-9 on the flight? I was all excited one time, I walked up to the gate with my bag in tow and what do I see? A 757!!! I was like Holy Shit my day has come! Then they changed my gate. Oh yeah. DC-9. In a way I am a geek because I post on a website and I have never worked in the airline industry or flown a plane. I have flown on a Ford Tri-Motor. That was cool.

Official geek: Every Thursday and Friday I see the BA 777 take off from TPA on my way home. I slow down and stare at it. If that doesn't make me a geek, nothing will.

Some people try taking pics but the photographs in question are rarely "professionally standard" enougth to get accepted onto a plane-spotters website whereas some pics ive seen get accepted are utter tosh...work that one out.
Also some "spotters" dont care about planes and only come here to trash the place purposley by directing insults and comments at one another.

Whenever I see a contrail, or hear a jet passing over, I stop everything I'm doing to look for the jet. Once I find it, I can usually tell what type of aircraft it is. I have never gotten the registration.

In my old area, I could also tell you where that plane was most likely going, but since moving I can't do that, new area = new routes and destinations.

As far as flight levels, I just have to best-guess on that one. It's easy when you have two aircraft in the sky, then you can tell which is higher than the other. But unless the AC is at a low cruise altitude (lower 30s), it really is a guessing game.

The biggest a.net nerds have got to be those people who write agonizingly long trip reports about boring domestic flights, like BWI to MDW on WN.

Seriously, no one cares how many times the f/a walked up and down the aisle collecting your garbage, and how many bags of pretzels you got. Get a life!!
